Filip+Inna founder shares work with indigenous artisans at Philippine Embassy in Berlin

November 16, 2017

Filip+Inna founder Lenora Luisa Cabili shared the brand´s journey with more than twenty guests who attended the talk at the Philippine Embassy.

As part of its Gender and Development (GAD) program and its advocacy of Philippine design and social enterprise, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted on 13 November a conversation with Filip+Inna founder Lenora Luisa Cabili under its Coffee with Creatives series. Filip+Inna is a decade-old homegrown fashion brand that works with indigenous groups in the archipelago by creating contemporary clothing and accessories that use their traditional embroidery, weaving, and beadwork.

Ms. Cabili shared the brand’s journey with the more than twenty, mostly women guests who attended the talk. Ms. Cabili noted that the brand has deep roots in Mindanao, with her mother hailing from Basilan. Her mother also danced with the Bayanihan dance company, further deepening her and her siblings’ appreciation for Philippine culture. Later, she would also join the dance company herself.

Ms. Cabili also narrated her adventures searching for and working with artisans in far-flung places. Currently, the brand works with up to twenty indigenous groups, and Ms. Cabili has five more groups she plans to work with in the near future. Asked if she was open to working with more groups, Ms. Cabili laughed. “I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said enough, we’ve got a good number, only to be unable to say no when I’m approached by new groups wanting to partner.”

Most of Filip+Inna’s artisans are women, who have been able to make a living from their traditional skills into a good livelihood with the help of the brand. Not only does Ms. Cabili ensure that they are paid well—the artisans are often paid on a per-stitch basis, she also gives them significant leeway to use their skills and creativity. Usually, she simply provides them with the materials, such as threads and fabric, and gives them free rein to use their imagination in doing their embroidery and stitchwork.

One of the guests asked if Filip+Inna would be open to adjusting the design of its products to cater to German tastes, which tend to be more muted and subdued than Filipino preferences. “You’ve anticipated our design thrust for next year,” Ms. Cabili replied. “In Filip+Inna’s early years, we used a lot of embroidery because we wanted to make a mark. Now that we’ve done that, we’re open to exploring new design directions.”

Filip+Inna is at the vanguard of a growing movement of social enterprises in the Philippines that are reviving indigenous and artisanal traditions. Earlier this year, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin also invited Ms. Rosal Lim of Rurungan sa Tubod Foundation to talk about their venture’s efforts to equip and employ women from poor fishing communities in Palawan with pina weaving skills and technology. Vividly colorful paintings and moving sculptures of artists Mike Garcia, Mario Lubrico, Elordie Mesac, and Nil Sencillo, all homegrown talents of Palawan, are now on display at the Philippine Embassy in Berlin. Dubbed, “Art, Nature & Culture of Palawan,” the exhibit features artworks that depict the natural beauty and ethnological treasures of the province.

“Filipinos are very proud of Palawan because of its exceptional natural beauty. We are even prouder of the province’s people, who have been excellent stewards of their environment, and who are themselves very creative. We consider the province as a model for sustainable tourism. We are happy that through the beautiful works of these four artists, Palawan’s beauty and our responsibility to protect this natural treasure have once again been brought to our collective consciousness,” Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek said.

The event was made more special by the attendance of no less than Mr. Arsenio Lizaso, President of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Mr. Lizaso congratulated the artists for successfully mounting the exhibit – their first in a major world capital. He also took the opportunity to inform both Filipino and foreign guests of the mandate and major initiatives of the CCP in support of Filipino artists.

Philippine Presence at the Frankfurt Book Fair

October 24, 2017

The Philippines brought sunshine to Frankfurt once again as the country’s top local publishing companies participated for the third straight year at the 2017 Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) held on 11-15 October 2017 at the Frankfurt Exhibition Grounds, Germany.

The Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP) and the National Book Development Board (NBDB) brought together sixteen publishers and publishing groups under the theme, “Books Philippines: A New Wave of Storytelling.”

For this year, the delegation members included the following:

  1. ABC Educational Development Center
  2. Adarna House, Inc.
  3. Anvil Publishing House
  4. Ateneo De Manila University Press
  5. Book Development Association of the Philippines
  6. C & E Publishing
  7. Central Books
  8. Claretian Communications Foundation
  9. Lampara Publishing House and Precious Pages
  10. Page Jump Media
  11. Rex Publishing House
  12. University of the Philippines Press
  13. Vicarish Publications
  14. WS Pacific Publications
  15. Primetrade Asia

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) sponsored two artists who joined the delegation: children’s book illustrator Liza Flores and book writer Carla Pacis.

The Philippine Pavilion continued to banner the brand theme “Books Philippines: A New Wave of Storytelling,” featuring different genres of books produced by the participating publishing houses, ranging from children’s books to young adult literature, biographies and history books to contemporary fiction, and text books to hardbound books on Philippine arts and culture.

“The Philippines is coming close to the end of the ‘being noticed, being recognized’ phase,” NBDB Chair Neni Sta. Romana-Cruz observed. “This is only the third year that we have had a country stand and we are committed to participate consistently at the Frankfurt Book Fair.”

Children’s books, in particular, have been garnering special attention at the trade fair. BDAP President Ani Rosa Almario noted that “from our conversations with agents and publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Filipino children’s books are slowly being noticed for our unique storytelling and our excellent art. Children’s books showcase our country’s imagination, and reflect the issues that concern us as a nation.”

During the formal opening of the Philippine Pavilion, Minister and Consul Adrian Cruz of the Philippine Embassy in Berlin thanked the NBDB and the participating publishing groups for helping promote a culture of reading and authorship among Filipinos. He urged the Philippine delegation to help cultivate the intellect of Filipinos and encourage them to become critical thinkers.

The Philippine delegation also boosted awareness and interest in local literature and culture when, on 12 October 2017, the NBDB and BDAP participated at the ASEAN Forum and at the book launching of “The First Five: A New Collection of Southeast Asian Writing,” a joint publication venture by Ateneo de Manila University Press (Philippines), Buku Fixi (Malaysia), Ethos Books (Singapore), Silkworm Books (Thailand) and Yayasan Pustaka Obor (Indonesia). The publication represents the publishers’ commitment to shared languages and friendships that defy cultural and national boundaries.

The continued presence of the Philippines at the Book Fair was made possible through the subsidy provided by the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, who helped (NBDB) secure a budget for the professionally-designed and eye-catching country pavilion.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is held annually at the Frankfurt Trade Fair Grounds and is considered the world’s largest and oldest trade fair for books. It is the biggest marketplace where publishers, agents, authors, media professionals, artists, illustrators, antiquarians and book and trade associations converge to negotiate publishing and licensing rights. The natural beauty and rustic charm of the Philippines is being showcased in a special photo exhibit at the Philippine Embassy in Berlin by award-winning Filipino photographer, Mr. Carlos Esguerra.

The exhibit dubbed, “Philippine Contemplative Landscape,” was opened last October 10 with a simple ceremony attended by members of the diplomatic corps and other Berlin-based expatriates, as well as members of the Filipino community.

“We invited Mr. Carlos Esguerra to hold his exhibit here at the Embassy to share his unique digital photography style with the public. They give our German and foreign friends a snapshot of the beautiful places in the Philippines that they have yet to discover and also see his creative perspective. For our fellow Filipinos, I hope these photos will not only bring back good memories of the country that they still consider home, but at the same time elicit greater appreciation of the art of photography,” Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek said.

Mr. Esguerra described his zen-inspired photographs as “clean and uncluttered images of serene contemplative landscapes, or architecture, captured with the least number of elements, framed, and composed in simple, austere view.”

His images of the country’s most iconic places like, the Mayon Volcano, Coron, and the Banaue Rice Terraces, as well as daily life in rural areas presented a unique dreamlike appearance in colored, and black and white photographs.

Mr. Esguerra has received awards from photography competitions in the Philippines and other countries, including Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, and the United States, where he is currently based.

He is also received the “Pamana ng Pilipino” award from the Office of the President; the “Ani ng Dangal” award in 2011 from the National Commission on Culture and the Arts; the “Dr. Jose Rizal” award from Knights of Rizal (New York chapter); and the “Distinguished Alumni” award from his alma mater, the University of the Philippines.

The exhibit is open for public viewing until October 24, Mondays to Fridays (0900H-1100H and 1300H-1600H). Interested individuals are requested to set an appointment by sending an email to culture@philippine-embassy.de.END
