RETRACING RIZAL’S JOURNEY THROUGH GERMANY

July 6, 2017

Dr. Jose Rizal’s affection for Germany and its people is evident in his many travels in his “scientific mother country.” For more than a year, he moved from city to city, admiring the beauty of the cities along the banks of the Rhine and immersing in many intellectual pursuits in other parts of the country.

Berlin, the capital, is where Dr. Rizal’s most pivotal literary work, Noli Me Tangere, first came off the press, eventually paving the way for Filipinos’ pursuit of independence from Spain.

This year, in celebration of the 156th anniversary of our national hero’s birth, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin launched an illustrated map called, “Rizal in Germany,” The map retraces Rizal’s journey through the country from February 1886 to May 1887, with special focus on Wilhelmsfeld, Heidelberg and Berlin, the three cities where he spent most of his time.

“We’d like to rekindle once more our people’s knowledge of and interest in the life of Jose Rizal,” Philippine Ambassdor Melita Sta.Maria-Thomeczek said. “We summarized what the diaries and the books say into a kind of trail and make it easily accessible, both as a printed material and a digital map.”

A simple ceremony was held in the chancery on Dr. Rizal’s birthday, June 19, to mark the map’s launch. The event, jointly organized by the Embassy and the Ladies for Rizal, included singing of traditional songs and poetry-reading.

The map features illustrations by June Digan and was designed and laid out by Berlin-based artist Jenny Peñas. It can be downloaded from the Embassy website through this link: http://philippine-embassy.de/rizal-trail-in-germany/rizal-map/.

Rizal birth anniversary commemoration in Wilhelmsfeld

Dr. Rizal’s birth anniversary was also commemorated in Wilhelmsfeld, a municipality in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg, last June 11.

The event, which was held at the town’s very own Rizal Park, was attended by the Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul General, Ms. Donna Rodriguez; Wilhelmsfeld Mayor Hans Zellner, Mayor-elect Christoph Oeldorf, Order of the Knights of Rizal Commander Werner Filsinger (Wilhelmsfeld- Heidelberg Chapter), and other members of the Order (including Bonn and Stuttgart chapters) and the Ladies for Rizal. It coincided with 20th anniversary of the chartering of the Order’s Wilhelmsfeld-Heidelberg Chapter.

A wreath was laid before the park’s Rizal statue and children who received excellent grades in school were awarded the Rizal Prize by Mayor Zellner. Rizal expert, Dr. Emmanuel Calasio also gave a lecture on Rizal’s heroism.

In a speech to mark the occasion, Consul General Rodriguez expressed the Embassy’s appreciation for Mayor Zellner’s “significant contributions towards propagating the life and works of our national hero and for keeping his memory alive in the hearts and minds of the people of Wilhelmsfeld.”

Mayor Zellner earlier received the Embassy’s Jose Rizal Cultural Heritage Award from Philippine Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek for his efforts to promote Dr. Rizal’s legacy in Heidelberg and Wilhelmsfeld.

The Consul General likewise conveyed the Embassy’s gratitude to the Order of the Knights of Rizal and the Ladies for Rizal and assured them of its “continued commitment to work closely together in promoting friendship and building bridges between the German and Filipino communities.”

Dr. Rizal stayed in Wilhelmsfeld from April 26 to June 26, 1886, at the vicarage of Protestant Pastor Karl Ullmer, whom he considered as a close friend. A historical marker was installed on the vicarage’s façade, and in 1964, the street in front of it was renamed Rizalstraße (Rizal Street). END

The special five-course dinner consisted of kinilaw (assorted seafood cooked with vinegar), sopa de molo (clear soup with dumplings), ginataang isda (fish with crabfat sauce), dalandan (a citrus fruit) sherbet, and bistek tagalog (beef with soy sauce glaze).

Guests from the German Parliament and Foreign Ministry, members of the diplomatic corps, local media, and other personalities from the arts and culture scene lingered late into the night as they enjoyed an impressive dessert spread of turrones de Manila, canonigo, queso de bola cheesecake, caramel bars, and torta de tablea, paired with barako coffee and salabat.

“This is indeed a very special occasion because the visit of the Kulinarya Team to Germany coincided with our independence month, so we organized a very rare sit-down dinner reception to celebrate 119 years of Philippine Independence, and to introduce our guests to Filipino food,” Ambassador Thomeczek said.

The night was made even more special by the musical performance of professional Filipino classical singer, Mr. Jonathan Zaens, accompanied by Dr. Abelardo Galang II on the piano.

The Kulinarya Team touched base with culinary students during their visits to the Hamburg Hotel School (hotelfachschule) and the Brillat Savarin School in Berlin.

Ambassador Thomeczek opened the Kulinarya exhibit on June 20 at the Hotelfachschule (hotel school) Hamburg. The exhibit, which ran until June 26, gave visitors comprehensive information on Filipino food, complete with mouth-watering photos of Filipino dishes.

The event’s highlight was a lecture on Filipino flavors by Ms. Michaela Fenix attended by some 80 faculty members and students, and an adobo cooking demonstration by Chef Myrna Segismundo, assisted by fellow Kulinarya Team chefs, Jill Sandique and Raul Ramos.

After the program, students eagerly lined up to taste a sampler set prepared by the Kulinarya Team composed of adobo paté, adobo, rice, and ginataang halu-halo, as well as cocktails made of Filipino alcoholic beverages. They found the flavors very interesting and refreshingly different from other Asian cuisines. School officials also had a taste of Filipino kaldereta during a simple lunch shared with Embassy personnel and the Kulinarya Team.

The same lecture at the Brillat Savarin School in Berlin on June 23 was also well-attended. Philippine vinegar and soy sauce, ube, pili nuts, and atsara, picked the students curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions on how to use the rare ingredients in their recipes.

The Embassy’s partnership with the two culinary schools was made possible by the efforts of Hotelfachschule Hamburg offcials, Robert Panz and Ctefan Wohlfeil; and Niklas Siebecke and Jürgen Dietrich of Brillat Savarin School.

Forbes.com features Filipino food

The Kulinarya Tour garnered a lot of attention, both from the Filipino and international media, most notable of which is a feature article entitled, “Philippine cuisine is catching on, and these are the dishes you need to try,” published last June by online magazine Forbes.com.

The events and interviews with Ambassador Thomeczek and Ms. Segismundo were also featured on GMA’s News to Go and Balitanghali newscasts and Rappler.

FLAVOURS OF THE PHILIPPINES LAUNCHED IN BERLIN

June 8, 2017

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin launched “Flavours of the Philippines,” a month-long Filipino culinary festival, last May 30 at the Ambassador’s official residence with a dinner for media friends.

The event was attended by Ingrid Müller, Editor-in-Chief of Berlin Tagesspiegel; Franz Michael Rohm of Berliner Morgenpost’s Culinary Section; Diplomacy and Business Magazine Publisher; Frank Schüttig and Editor, Rainer Schubert; and The Filipino Channel Germany correspondent, Ms. Grace Pickert. Featured for the evening were a variety of traditional home-cooked meals and more modern versions of Filipino food prepared by Berlin’s Filipino restaurateurs.

Popular Filipino beer chow or pulutan and streetfood like fishballs, liempo (grilled pork belly), inihaw na manok (grilled chicken), tuna kinilaw (raw tuna salad with greens), manok chicharon (crispy chicken skin), and lumpia (crispy rolls), were served to beer-loving Germans as starters from a vintage food truck.

Kalamansi juice was served with the starters.

The main dishes paired with servings of white and garlic rice included beef tapa (stir-fried beef with soy and pepper), pancit (stir-fried noodles with meat and vegetables), and of course, chicken adobo (meat braised in vinegar and soy sauce) – widely-considered as the Philippines’ national dish.

Sisig (crunchy pork bits), a staple Filipino pulutan uniquely presented on a sizzling plate, was the evening’s favorite dish, with its flavourful sour-spicy taste.

The guests’ sweet cravings were also satisfied with traditional desserts like halo-halo (a concoction of beans, sweet fruits topped with shaved ice, milk, yam, ice cream, and custard), cassava cake, and turon (banana fritters with jack fruit) with pinipig (rice crispies) ice cream.

The meal ended with a serving of the world-famous ripe Philippine mango.

“Berlin, with its multi-culti, open and vibrant atmosphere, has always welcomed elements that are different, that are new, and this is true even for food. While Asian cuisine has already made its presence felt here, we thought that there is still room for a different kind of Asian cooking, and it is about time that the German palette get to know more about Philippine food…,” Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek said.

“Flavours of the Philippines,” which is part of this year’s Independence Day celebrations, will also include a cooking demonstration and a photo exhibit on Filipino food in Germany’s premier port city, Hamburg, and a lectured for culinary students in Berlin to be followed by a traditional Filipino merienda. The highlight of the festivities is a formal Independence Day dinner on June 22 to be prepared by the renowned Kulinarya Team led by Chef Myrna Segismundo.
