PHILIPPINES LAUNCHES STAMP TO COMMEMORATE 60 YEARS OF PHILIPPINE-GERMAN RELATIONS

May 14, 2014

Berlin, 14 May 2014. The Philippine Embassy recently launched a Commemorative Stamp to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Germany.  Philippine Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, launched the stamp alongside Ms. Birgitt Ory, Director for Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific of the Federal Foreign Office.

In her welcome remarks at the Tagesspiegel’s Lounge, Ambassador Natividad emphasized “the real heart of Philippine-German relations are the people to people connections that have linked us together through the years.”  She further noted that recent face to face engagements at the political level, which included the visits last year of Vice President Binay and those of key cabinet secretaries to Germany as well as the visits of Ministers Westerwelle and von der Leyen to the Philippines, have given a human dimension to official relations.  In particular, they were an important catalyst in pursuing tangible cooperation in the fields of labor, defense, social security, finance, renewable energy, and development cooperation.

The commemorative stamp also has a practical application in improving the services offered by the Embassy.  Even in the digital age, official correspondence remains an integral facet of the work of an Embassy.  Ambassador Natividad highlighted that the postal system is vital to the Embassy’s work in processing and transmitting passports, visas, and notarized business documents, which are essential in enhancing the mobility of Filipinos and in stimulating stronger Philippine-German business links.

Mr. Antonio Gorordo, a Filipino digital artist, designed the stamp to emphasize that both countries stand side by side in times of challenges and prosperity.  The stamps will be made available for purchase at the consular section of the Philippine Embassy.

The formal launch was followed by a performance of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Choral Ensemble.  The performance, which included both contemporary and traditional Filipino songs, earned rave reviews from the audience.  Dr. Uwe Schmelter, former Director of the Goethe Insitute in Manila and now the Vice President of the German-Korea Society in Berlin, praised the group’s sublime performance, particularly their vibrant interpretation of the Lion King’s “Circle of Life.”
The University of the Philippines Choral Ensemble is the official and resident choral group of University of the Philippines Los Baños.  Founded in October 1991 by former members of the UP Rural High School Glee Club, the Choral Ensemble is composed of students, alumni, faculty members, and staff of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.  The group received significant acclaim during its recent participation at choral competitions in Montreux, Switzerland and Mosbach, Germany.

The Philippines and Germany established diplomatic relations on 8 October 1954.*END

Benefit Concert Successfully Held at Berlin City Hall: German Private Donations at Almost 50 million Euros for Typhoon Yolanda

28 November 2013, Berlin. The Filipino Community and Philippine Embassy in Berlin, together with several high profile partners, successfully staged a benefit concert for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) on 27 November 2013 at the Berlin City Hall (Rotes Rathaus).  The concert, organized in less than a week, was made possible through the valuable support of the Federal Foreign Office (Auswäertiges Amt), Berlin Senate Chancellery (Senatskanzlei von Berlin), Willkommen in Berlin, and Germany’s Relief Coalition (Aktion Deutschland Hilft).  Dr. Abelardo Galang II, a German-trained Filipino pianist based in Berlin, served as musical director.

In the spirit of solidarity, hundreds packed the main hall of the Rotes Rathaus to learn more about how the general public could help those in the disaster-stricken areas of the Central Philippines.  Mr. Christoph Waffenschmidt, Chair of World Vision Germany and Board Member of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, emphasized the importance of these charity events, which ensure that the plight of the typhoon victims remains in the public limelight.  Mr. Waffenschmidt and Director Clemens von Goetze of the Federal Foreign Office both highlighted that although many German and international relief organizations are now ramping up the delivery of assistance, much more needs to be done.  Ambassador von Goetze emphasized that the Federal Government, in addition to the 6.5 million Euros provided in immediate humanitarian assistance, was committed to help the Philippines in the recovery and reconstruction phases.  Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, for her part, thanked the German government and people for their steadfast support.  She highlighted: “Tonight, just as we pay respect to those whose lives were cut short and to those who have survived, we also pay tribute to those who stood by us in our time of need, and to those who continue to stand by us as we clear the rubble, pick up the pieces, and rebuild… And Germany, the Federal government, and the German people, stood by us at the darkest hour.  If there is any silver lining in the dark cloud that was Haiyan, it is this hand of friendship extended to us by Germany, and by the international community.”  Private companies and citizens in Germany have now donated almost 49.6 million Euros (PhP 2.95 billion) to the NGO alliances of Aktion Deutschland Hilft and Aktionsbuendnis Katastrophenhilfe, which are now providing food and potable water as well as sanitation, shelter and medical services to the typhoon victims.  Almost PhP 350,000 was raised during the evening’s concert and at an earlier concert at the Filipino community’s Bayernallee parish.

The audience witnessed a medley of classical and contemporary songs, which included performances by Barbara Leifer, twin Indonesian pianists Sonja and Shanti Sungkono as well as Andion Fernandez and Dr. Abelardo Galang, who are Berlin-based Filipino artists.  Wilkommen in Berlin, the Federal Foreign Office’s diplomatic club, had its WIB Choir serenade the audience with Ryan Cayabyab’s “Paraiso” while the Philippine Embassy’s Mylah and Jose Mari Rubio closed the evening with a moving rendition of Cayabyab’s “O Bayan Ko.”

Aktion Deutschland Hilft, an NGO coalition composed of: Action Medeor, ADRA Deutschland, CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg, Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, Malteser Hilfsdienst, Habitat for Humanity, and World Vision, among others, is continuing to raise support for the typhoon victims.  More information on the organization may be obtained here: http://www.aktion-deutschland-hilft.de/de/hilfseinsaetze/taifun-haiyan-philippinen-vietnam/kurzinfo-taifun-haiyan-philippinen/

Ph Ambassador Celebrates 75 Years of Oktoberfest in Manila & 60 Years of Ph-German Relations

October 8, 2013

PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR CELEBRATES  75 YEARS OF OKTOBERFEST IN MANILA AND 60 YEARS OF PHILIPPINE-GERMAN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

8 October 2013, Manila –  “As Oktoberfest Manila celebrates 75 years filled with bratwurst, sauerkraut, pork knuckles, and liters and liters of German beer, Philippine-German diplomatic relations also celebrates the countdown to its 60th year anniversary this October,” Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad  remarked during the celebration of 75 years of Oktoberfest in the Philippines at the Harbor Garden Tent at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Manila.

The 75th anniversary of the Oktoberfest coincides with the start of the celebration of the 60th year of Philippine-German diplomatic relations. It was in 1954 when then President Ramon Magsaysay appointed Consul General Policronio de Venecia, MD to open the first Philippine consular representation in Hamburg, Germany. Consul General de Venecia is the father of Madame Gretchendel Rosario, the wife of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario.

The Oktoberfest festivities, spearheaded by the German Embassy in Manila and the German Club, looked back to the enduring tradition of the German Oktoberfest which continues to be popular in the Philippines and much-anticipated by Filipinos.  Also present at the festivities were Mr. Michael Hasper, Charge d’Afaires a.i,, of the German Embassy; Mr. Michael Scheile, the former President of the German Club; and Dr. Günter Matschuck, President of the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Ambassador Natividad delivered her remarks on “75 years of Oktoberfest in Manila, 60 years of Philippine-German Diplomatic Relations”. Noting the Filipinos fondness for the Bavarian tradition, Ambassador Natividad remarked on the vast amounts of beer and German food consumed by Filipinos in the previous year’s Oktoberfest and expressed her anticipation for the feast prepared by Master Chef Eric Costille.

On a  more serious note, the Ambassador, fresh from the recent Philippine-German political consultations, also shared her outlook on prospects for closer bilateral diplomatic relations with Germany.

“Yesterday, during the senior-level political consultations between the Philippines and Germany, we agreed that we have come a long way in recent years in moving forward Philippine-German relations. There have been several high-level visits between our countries, including the visit of SFA del Rosario to Berlin in 2011. And this year, the visit of Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Minister Ursula von der Leyen to Manila as well as the visit of Vice President Jejomar Binay to Berlin. Several advances also took place in different areas of sectoral cooperation: defense, labor, taxation, social security, to name a few,” she stated.

The Ambassador capped her speech by evoking the history of the Oktoberfest festival, “May the spirit of the wedding feast of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese live on in tropical Manila. So I join you all in awaiting the twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer!” .END

Filcom from Frankfurt Rhein-Main Organizes Bus Tour To Visit the Philippine Embassy in Berlin

October 2, 2013

BERLIN.  Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad received a group of Filipinos who traveled from Frankfurt am Main to pay a visit to the Philippine Embassy in Berlin.  Members of the group took the opportunity to renew their passports, while several others requested other consular services.

Ambassador Natividad welcomed the Filipino visitors and expressed her appreciation that the group came to the Embassy. She informed them of the Embassy’s upcoming activities in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Philippine-German diplomatic relations and plans to conduct more consular mobile operations for 2014 in different German cities. It was a poignant moment for some of the visitors, as they were able to participate in the singing of the Philippine national anthem for the first time in many years.

The Filipinos came from different parts of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region, known to be one of the most active cultural and financial centers in Europe and which boasts a high concentration of Filipino residents. The officers and staff of the Consular Section of the Philippine Embassy attended to their various consular needs, which included e-passport renewals, authentication, acknowledgement, and request for legal capacity to contract marriage.
The forty-three Filipinos and naturalized Germans (former Filipinos) traveled by bus from Frankfurt am Main and embarked on an eight-hour journey to Berlin during a weekend. Mr. Klaus Elbert, a long-time resident from Frankfurt am Main was the one who coordinated the activity.  “I am happy,” Mr. Elbert stressed, “to organize similar bus tour activities in the future, but I know this means extra work for the Embassy.”  Mr. Elbert is a known “friend of the Philippines,” as he is one of the organizers of this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebration that took place in Dietzenbach, Germany.    (END)
