The Brillat-Savarin Schule, one of the leading German culinary institutes in Berlin, held a special course on Filipino cuisine on 19 February 2020.

Around twenty of the school’s nearly 5,000 students, received a lesson on traditional Philippine dishes, the Filipino flavor palate, and special ingredients. The course was taught by Guest Instructor Filipino-German Chef Bulawan Callanta, himself a graduate of Brillat-Savarin. Chef Callanta is the Chef-Owner of popular AYAN Filipino Streetfood in Berlin. He was assisted in the course by Filipina Chef Maite Hontiveros-Dittke of the MamaSita Test Kitchen.

The students learned how to prepare classic Filipino recipes including adobo, liempo, sinigang na bangus, fishballs, fresh lumpia, tortang talong, palitaw, and bilo-bilo.

Among those taking the course was Filipina Jerralyn Elcano, a popular personality in the Filipino-German community who impressed the judges of Germany’s well-known Supertalent Show in 2018 for her unique pizza-throwing dance routine.

Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-De Vega and staffmembers from the Philippine Embassy in Berlin were on hand to observe and to offer encouragement to the students.

Brillat-Savarin faculty member and Student Director Chef Niklaus Siebecke, speaking on behalf of the institute thanked Chef Callanta, Chef Dittke, and the Philippine Embassy for helping Brillat-Savarin introduce diverse flavors and culinary traditions to their school. He noted that these efforts would help in producing well-rounded culinary professionals.

The evening ended with great reviews for the work done by the instructors and students throughout the day. Ambassador Dizon-De Vega commented in her word of thanks that this is very positive initial step in introducing the next generation of German chefs to the unique flavors of Philippine cuisine.

The Brillat-Savarin School named after 18th century epicure and gastronome Jean Anthèlme Brillat-Savarin is Germany’s largest training institution with a focus on the hotel and hospitality industry.  END

PHL EMBASSY IN BERLIN PUSHES FOR CLOSER COOPERATION WITH HAMBURG

February 20, 2020

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin, led by Ambassador Maria Theresa Dizon-de Vega, pushed for closer cooperation with Hamburg during her visit to the northern German city-state last February 17.

The Ambassador met with the Hamburg Government’s external relations chief, State Secretary Almut Möller and Director General for International Affairs Corinna Nienstedt at Hamburg City Hall.

Ambassador Dizon-de Vega conveyed the Embassy’s appreciation for the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere provided by the people and government of Hamburg to over a thousand Filipinos living in the city-state, as well as to the thousands of Filipino seafarers working on international vessels calling at its port, the second busiest after Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

State Secretary Möller welcomed the Philippine Embassy’s initiative of meeting with city-state officials and assured the Ambassador of the Hamburg Government’s support for efforts to broaden cooperation. She said that as a trading city, Hamburg has always actively sought and will continue to seek external partnerships.

The State Secretary expressed particular interest in the fields of innovation and new technology in the Philippines. The Ambassador, for her part, apprised the Hamburg officials of positive developments in the Philippines, such as the newly-enacted Start-ups Law and the country’s steady rise in the Global Innovation Index as well as the Embassy’s already active engagement with the city-state’s business sector.

Hamburg is home to Germany’s largest port and is considered as the country’s gateway to the world. European aircraft company Airbus also has a manufacturing facility in the city-state, which is the primary supplier of single-aisle passenger aircraft used by Philippine carriers.

In line with this effort, the Ambassador along with Political and Cultural Officer Alvin Malasig met with French academic and Philippine Studies expert Prof. Dr. Elsa Clavé of the University of Hamburg’s Institute of Asian and African Studies.

The Ambassador and Prof. Clavé discussed the University’s plan to come up with student prizes for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses on the Philippines, a proposed MOU on academic exchanges with the University of the Philippines Diliman, and an immersion program for Filipino language students to be hosted by academic institutions outside Metro Manila.

The Professor also expressed willingness to arrange Filipino film screenings in the University with films to be provided by the PHL Embassy and to assign resource speakers for post-arrival orientation seminars for newly-arrived Filipino migrants together with the Embassy. The Embassy turned over to Prof. Clave a copy of Discovering Dayaw a book by Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda based on her NCCA television series on Philippine culture. The book will form part of the Philippine collection of the Institute.

Filipino communities across Germany joined celebrations of the Feast of the Sto. Niño more popularly known as the Sinulog this month.

In Berlin, Filipino Community members gathered at the Parish of the Holy Spirit in Bayernallee to join the annual Sinulog commemoration and mass. Fr. Tranquilino De Ocampo, SVD, Chaplain of the Filipino Catholic Community at Bayernallee officiated the special mass. The event featured the traditional Sinulog dance paying homage to the Child Jesus performed by different groups in the Chaplaincy. Philippine Embassy personnel led by Vice Consul Alvin Malasig, Vice Consul Mina Angeles Ganzon, and Labor Attaché Delmer Cruz participated in the activity.

In Hamburg, the Sinulog Feast and Mass at Kleiner Michel Parish had as its Main Celebrant the Archbishop of Hamburg Stefan Hesse who donned Philippine and Sto. Niño-themed vestments in tribute to one of most enduring symbols of Christianity in the Philippines. He was joined by outgoing Filipino Community Chaplain Fr. Simon Boiser SVD, incoming Chaplain Fr. Ritchill Salinas SVD, Fr. Jonas Piodo SVD, and Parish Priest Fr. Philipp Gortz SJ.

Community groups from Hamburg, Kiel, Lubeck, and Bremen with participants from Rostock and as far as Denmark joined the Sinulog presentations and dances.

Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega spoke of the significance of the Sinulog Feast stating that like the image of the Child Jesus which journeyed from Europe before reaching Philippine shores nearly 500 years ago, Filipino migrants are also undertaking their respective journeys and bring with them their faith and their culture.

Other Filipino communities such as the Rottenburg Community in Stuttgart held their Sinulog celebrations earlier in January. Similar activities likewise took place in North Rhine Westphalia while other cities will be observing the feast in the coming weeks throughout Germany.

The Sinulog Festival takes place annually in the Philippines every January. It is commemorated throughout the Philippines and among Filipino Catholic communities overseas with the largest celebration taking place in Cebu Province. Blending Catholic rituals and folk traditions, it is an homage to the Child Jesus, one of the first symbols of Christianity to reach the country in the 16th century. Since then, the Sto. Niño has remained an important symbol of faith for many Filipinos worldwide.

For 2021, the Filipino-German community plans to take part in a Sinulog Festival being planned in Rome, Italy to mark the Quincentennial or 500 years celebration of the Philippines. END
