Sergio and Maik are both residents of Berlin and have an ongoing interest and connection to the Philippines.

Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-De Vega provides a brief introduction to the video and invites audiences to join the linguistic and cultural journey of Sergio and Maik.

The video aims to introduce some words and expressions in Filipino as well as highlight contemporary Philippine popular music to Filipino, Filipino-German, and international audiences for Buwan ng wika 2020.

The video has since been featured by Philippine network GMA News and has nearly 7,000 views since its released on 29 August 2020.

New online series of Philippine Embassy in Berlin unpacks pandemic’s lessons starting with weaving industry

August 26, 2020

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin launched last weekend a new online series entitled Unpacking the Pandemic’s Lessons through Interviews with Filipino Thought-leaders/Talents (UPLIFT) with a session on “Weaving change, fashioning the future.” Featuring Ms Anya Lim, co-founder and ‘Princess Ant’ of Cebu-based social and cultural enterprise ANTHILL Fabric Gallery, a number of session participants donned Philippine weaves in line with ANTHILL’s rallying cry #wearyourtribewithpride.

Ms Lim recounted ANTHILL’s beginnings inspired by her childhood encounters with indigenous Philippine cultures courtesy of her mother, who worked with indigenous communities, and how witnessing the disappearance of weaving traditions galvanized her to set up business that would assist weaving artisans in innovating their design and connecting to markets.

Thus, ANTHILL, which stands for Alternative Nest and Trading /Training Hub for Indigenous or Ingenious Little Livelihood seekers, was founded, and has since been at the vanguard of cultural preservation, community uplift, women empowerment, and sustainability promotion in the Philippines. It is leading the local movement on slow fashion that is “human-centered and allows us to really respect and honor the flow of stories that are intricately woven in the process.”

In line with UPLIFT’s thrust of examining the impacts of COVID-19 on various areas and aspects of society and the economy, Ms Lim also narrated the challenges ANTHILL and its artisans are facing because of the pandemic, and how they are navigating these challenges. For example, artisans who do not have their own looms are unable to go to the community weaving centers to work and have thus found ways to create new revenue streams through, for example, backyard agriculture. Meanwhile, online sales through its website have been a lifeline for ANTHILL amid the cancellation of several pop-up events it was slated to have this year. In addition to their usual merchandise, ANTHILL has come up with safety essentials like face masks featuring local weaves and Bayanihan self-care buckets in response to the pandemic.

Ambassador Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega lauded Anya and the ANTHILL team for their efforts and highlighted the importance of Filipinos supporting local industries and social enterprises especially at this time of need.

The UPLIFT session, which is part of the Embassy’s Gender & Development (GAD), Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan (TNK), and Sustainability programs also marks the celebration of Buwan ng mga Wika in August. Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-De Vega was one of the Keynote Speakers at a virtual session on “Europe, Asia and the World – Global Politics and Business 2020 – Following the Course of the Sun” organized by the German Global Trade Forum Berlin on 25 August 2020.

Over forty persons attended the online session and aside from Ambassador Dizon-De Vega, resource persons from Thailand, China, Russia, Hong Kong, Italy, and the McArthur Foundation also shared their views on the way forward for Europe and Asia in a post-pandemic scenario.

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega gave an overview of how the Philippines is coping with the pandemic and balancing public health concerns with efforts to re-build the economy. She outlined the macroeconomic picture emphasizing the sound economic and monetary fundamentals of the Philippines as well as efforts to mitigate the socio-economic impact of the pandemic on the most vulnerable sectors and industries.

She likewise mentioned the efforts of government to rapidly resume work on infrastructure projects under the flagship Build Build Build program and the bright spots which are emerging ranging from growth in the agricultural sector, the end of a months-long remittances drop, the upgrading and maintenance of the Philippines’ credit ratings, and improvements starting in June in the manufacturing, export, and import sectors.

The Philippines also assured the session of its continued efforts to promote an atmosphere of openness and cooperation with the global economic community at this challenging time, citing its active engagement in ASEAN, the WTO, and APEC, among others.

On the bilateral side, Ambassador Dizon-De Vega enumerated efforts to remain engaged with the Philippines’ German partners both in the public and private spheres. She noted that the Philippines and Germany are set to convene the inaugural meeting of the Joint Economic Committee this year to further economic activities between our two countries. She also outlines areas of possible cooperation in innovation, digitization, COVID-19 cooperation, construction and infrastructure, power and energy, aviation, technical-vocation education and training, and human resources.

The Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Berlin (PTIC) was likewise represented at the virtual session. END
