1000th Triple Win nurse receives warm welcome in Munich

Filipino and other foreign nurses help fill the gap in German hospitals.

Filipino nurse Janette dela Cruz received a bouquet of flowers from Mr. Raimund Becker, board member of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) of Germany, to congratulate her for being the 1000th nurse to arrive in Germany under the Triple Win Project (TWP) during a press conference held on July 31 at the Caritas House St. Nikolaus in Munich.

The TWP is a healthcare employment cooperation program administered by the German Enterprise for International Cooperation (GIZ) and BA’s International Placement Services (ZAV) with partner agencies in four countries, including the Philippines, where it is overseen by the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA). The three other countries are Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Tunisia, whose nurses, along with their Filipino counterparts, comprise the 1,000 now deployed in German hospitals and healthcare institutions under the program.

Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria Thomeczek congratulated the new nurses and thanked the Triple Win Partners and employers for their respective contributions to the program. “In the 1960s and ‘70s, we had many nurses coming to work in German hospitals,” she said. “Their deployment stopped in the 1980s with the oil crisis, and it is now being revived through the TWP, which has been recognized as a model of sustainable migration, whereby both the destination and receiving countries benefit, as well as the migrants themselves.”

The TWP relies on the strong cooperation among the program’s partners.

As part of celebrations marking the 50th Founding Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the embassies of the 10 ASEAN Member States in Berlin launched last August 8, an e-recipe book entitled, “Flavours of ASEAN: A Collection of Southeast Asian Dishes.”

recipe book

Foodies and those who are just craving for something different will find a variety of Southeast Asian food that are quite easy to prepare. These include rice-based dishes, savory meat and fish dishes, and soups, such as Brunei Darussalam’s rendang, Cambodia’s sam lor machu kreung sach ko (beef sour soup), Indonesia’s sate lilit (grilled fish skewer), Laos’ larb gai, Malaysia’s roti jala (lacey crepe), Myanmar’s mohinga (rice noodle in fish soup), the Philippines’ adobo, Singapore’s chicken rice, Thailand’s massaman curry, and Vietnam’s pho.

Dessert-lovers can also make their own turon or sweet banana fritters which are popular in the Philippines, and woun (coconut jelly) from Laos.

The book also contains interesting pieces of information regarding the dishes.

“Southeast Asian food, especially Thai and Vietnamese, are quite popular in Germany but we still have much more to offer to the German palette. This is not only about eating good food. It’s about sharing Southeast Asia’s diverse cultures and ways of life with our German friends through a complete culinary experience,” Philippine Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek said.

The recipe book was a project initiated by the Philippine Embassy in Berlin during its Chairmanship of the Berlin ASEAN Committee.

A copy of “Flavours of ASEAN” can be downloaded from the website of the Philippine Embassy, www.philippine-embassy.de, and those of other ASEAN embassies in Berlin. END

The sunny city of Karlsruhe served as the venue for 15th International Modern Arnis Summer Camp hosted by the Deutcher Arnis Verband e.V. (German Arnis Association).  Close to 200 students of modern arnis took part in the week-long event, which featured top-caliber instructors from Germany, the United States and the Philippines. From the Philippines, their guest instructors were Grand Master GM Rene R. Tongson, “caretaker” of Abaniko Tres Puntas, and Master Ginalyn Relos, Secretary General of the International Modern Arnis Federation Philippines.

Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali, is the national martial art and sport of the Philippines. It is a weapon-based, hand-to-hand fighting technique characterized by the use of swinging and twirling movements, accompanied by striking, thrusting and parrying techniques for defense and offense. Arnis is known abroad as “Filipino Martial Arts” or FMA, and it has gained global prominence through the efforts of FMA instructors overseas.

The Philippines will once again take center stage as it hosts the 9th FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS WORLD FESTIVAL featuring the expertise of local and foreign grand masters. The event will be held in Panglao, Bohol, on 19-23 March 2018.  Interested parties may check the Filipino Martial Arts World Festival Community’s FB page, @fmaworldfestival, or they may email them at fmafestival9@yahoo.com

Arnis practitioners from Germany and ten other countries hold FMA training drills. The summer camp not only provides for the learning of self-defense but also promotes camaraderie and familial bonding and encourages participants to stay in shape.

In his welcome speech, Consul Adrian Cruz expressed his appreciation to the DAV for zealously promoting modern arnis in Europe.  The DAV is considered one of the biggest FMA associations in Europe and is part of the WFMA (Worldwide Family of Modern Arnis).  To further promote modern arnis, the DAV maintains close contacts with different modern arnis organizations in the Philippines.  High ranked Masters from the Philippines are invited regularly to teach Modern Arnis during DAV seminars in Germany.  To gain more appreciation of the DAV, please view the following video: http://www.modern-arnis.de/english/index.shtml.   (END)

In her speech during the ASEAN Day reception at the Singaporean Embassy last August 8, Director General Lepel underscored the close cooperation, not only between Southeast Asian countries and Germany, but also between ASEAN and the European Union.

She added that the EU is increasingly looking at ASEAN and she emphasized the need for close cooperation, especially on non-traditional security challenges such as maritime security, anti-terrorism, cybersecurity, and disaster management.

She also thanked the Philippines, the current Chair of ASEAN, for inviting the EU to the East Asia Summit in Manila in November, which Germany considers as an important step in deepening cooperation between the two regional organizations.

Dr. Thomas Gambke, Chair of the ASEAN Friendship Group in the German Bundestag (lower house of parliament), meanwhile assured the BAC of his continued support for efforts to promote further cooperation.

BAC Chair and Singaporean Ambassador Laurence Bay recalled the establishment of ASEAN in 1967 as a five-member organization. He highlighted the impressive development that the current 10 ASEAN Members States have achieved so far, with their combined GDP of approximately 2.6 trillion US dollars, and the region’s strong economic fundamentals.

Ambassador Bay also noted that the EU is ASEAN’s second largest trading partner, with more than 246 billion euros-worth of trade in goods and services.

The event also saw the launch of BAC’s “Flavours of ASEAN” recipe book by Philippine Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek. The book features a collection of some of Southeast Asia’s popular dishes and desserts, including the Philippines’ adobo and turon. Its publication was a project initiated and led by the Philippine Embassy during its Chairmanship of the BAC. A copy of the e-book can be downloaded from the Philippine Embassy website, www.philippine-embassy.de.

Some of the dishes and desserts in the book were served streetfood-style at ASEAN country stalls at the Singaporean Embassy’s garden. Some 200 guests from various German government agencies, parliamentarians, members of the media, foreign diplomats, and ASEAN embassy staff enjoyed dishes like Brunei Darussalam’s rendang, Cambodia’s khor ko, Indonesia’s satay lilit, Laos’ larb gai, Malaysia’s roti jala, Myanmar’s mohinga, Singapore’s chicken rice, Thailand’s Yam Thua Phu, and Vietnam’s spring rolls.
