TRANSFER OF EMPLOYMENT OFFERS TARGETING FILIPINO NURSES IN GERMANY
The Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Berlin, as well as the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt, have received reports of Filipino nurses being lured by certain individuals and companies to relocate to nursing facilities, particularly in Darmstadt, Karlsruhe, and other areas in North Rhine Westphalia, with promises of “better job opportunities and working conditions,” which turn out to be false or misleading.
Filipino nurses in Germany are advised to exercise caution in entertaining such offers and to contact MWO Berlin to verify the job transfer offer and conditions of employment. Those who have fallen victim to such offers have reported:
- Contracts guarantee a fixed net salary but conceal tax deductions;
- Minimal initial tax deductions later led to substantial tax liabilities and problems;
- Being made to sign letters authorizing the individual/company to process their change of employer and registration with immigration office but these did not happen and resulted in non-processing of their work permit and non-registration in the Federal Register;
- Offer of high salary and salary increase after two years of employment turned out to be false;
- When nurses file complaints for unpaid salaries etc, the company files for bankruptcy, and then resumes operation under a different company name; and
- Being forced to leave Germany after their period of stay has expired because the company failed to process their documents to allow them to transfer to a new employer or nursing facility.
The public is encouraged to report individuals or companies involved in the above activities that exploit our Filipino workers.
For further information or to report concerns, please contact MWO Berlin via email at germany@mwoberlin.com or by telephone at +49 (030) 864 9500, Local 301.
