Philippine Embassy in Berlin Holds Consular Outreach in Frankfurt

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin conducted its seventh consular mobile outreach for the year in Frankfurt on 15 August 2015. The team, composed of Consul Rona Beth Goce, Ms. Amor del Mundo, Ms. Cecile Estrella, Ms. Mylah Rubio, Ms. Marie Reyes and Mr. Armand Mahinay, facilitated 138 passport applications, 36 notarization and authentication of documents, and 54 registrations under the overseas absentee voting system. The Embassy team was supported by Ms. Loredanna Hess, Honorary Consul at the Frankfurt Extension Office, Ms. Anabelle Apostol, Operations Officer and Mr. Mario Sicup of the Philippine Department of Tourism in Frankfurt.

For the second time, Dekra Akademie, under the auspices of Philippine Honorary Consul General Prof. Gerhard Zeidler, graciously hosted this year´s consular outreach. Using a pre-registration system, the consular team was able to better accommodate its applicants.

The mobile outreach is part of the Philippine Embassy’s efforts to bring its consular services closer to Filipinos residing in different parts of Germany. The next consular outreach services will take place in Bonn (September 5), Munich (September 19), and Essen (November 14). PE Holds Consular Mobile Outreach and Overseas Voters’ Registration in Northern Germany

Filipinos from Hamburg and nearby areas have their consular documents processed by the Consular Outreach Team from the Philippine Embassy in Berlin.

Berlin – A consular team from the Philippine Embassy in Berlin, composed of Minister Donna Rodriguez, Mr. Ruben Atienza, Ms. Cecilia Estrella, Mr. Melchor Francisco, Ms. Amor del Mundo and Ms. Marie Reyes, conducted a mobile outreach service at the Freie Evangelische Kirche Holstenwaal in Hamburg on 25 July 2015.

The Hamburg outreach was the sixth consular outreach missions to be conducted by the Philippine Embassy in 2015. The consular team was able to accommodate all consular applicants, facilitating 121 passport applications, notarization and authentication of documents, and registrations under the overseas absentee voting system. The team also answered consular inquiries posed by Filipino applicants and strengthened the Embassy’s network with Filipino community leaders.

Following the consular outreach in Hamburg, the Embassy team traveled to nearby Lübeck the following day to conduct Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) registration in cooperation with Dinotrans SIA, a logistics and trucking company which employs around a hundred Filipino truck drivers. The team was able to register 26 overseas Filipino voters from Lübeck.

The Philippine Embassy has been conducting regular outreach missions in different parts of Germany since 2013 as part of efforts to bring its consular services closer to Filipinos residing in Germany. The next outreach will take place in Frankfurt on 15 August 2015. (END)

The DAYAW Experience: A Celebration of Filipino Cuisine and Volunteerism at Berlin Food Art Week

Berlin-based Filipino culinary performance artist Joseph Michael Patricio or  “Pepe Dayaw” performed before a sold out show in Markthalle Neun, one of Berlin´s most prominent market and food halls.  “Dayaw: Cooking Filipino Contemporary” was part of the Berlin Food Art Week (http://www.foodartweek.com/), and a first for Filipino cuisine in Berlin.

The Pop-up restaurant featured eight dishes infused with tropical island flavors and using seasonal German regional ingredients.  Traditional dishes were presented with funky flair:

  • Kare-kare: Rice crepes with sautéed seasonal vegetables complented by peanut with rice flour and shrimp paste.

  • Kinilaw: Raw sea bass, avocado in vinegar, caramelized coco cream topped with deep-fried watermelon skin.

  • Fishball: Fried balls of smoked forellen served on a stick dipped in home-made banana ketchup with smoked paprika.

  • -Gazpacho: Watermelon, strawberries, and spreewald gherkin with a spicy ginger soy twist
  • -Sinigang: Slow-cooked broth of pork bone marrow, rhubarb, tomatoes and colatura di alici.

  • -Adobo, kanin, kamatis at atsara: Pork belly and chicken stew, tomato chutney, kohl rabi, and radish pickle.
  • -Champorado: Sticky rice cooked in kakao butter topped with crispy anchovy tempura

  • -Puto Bumbong: Tapioca and purple yam bursting into a sensual surprise.The concept of “Bayanihan”, or the spirit of communal unity and cooperation, infused the whole evening.  A team of artists, cooks, and organizers volunteered their time to help Pepe make the entire production a resounding success.  Performances by Mishka Adams, Dan Timm, Isa Tabasoares, Rosa Cordillera, and Los Pitutos added nostalgia and merriment to the evening.

The Filipino word Dayaw means to come together in celebration.  The whole experience was an immersion, a celebration of the collaborative and communal aspects of cooking and eating. Dayaw is a meal and performance designed by Pepe Dayaw, curated by Kathrin Kuna in partnership with Markthalle Neun, and done in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Berlin and the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Germany.

The University of Santo Tomas Singers Draws a Full House at the Historical Gedächtniskirche

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers´ concert at the historical Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedaechtniskirche was graced by an appreciative 600-strong audience who rewarded the artists with ovations.

In his remarks, Minister and Consul Adrian Elmer Cruz congratulated the UST Singers for making the Philippines proud as one of the country´s renowned ambassadors of music and assured the enthusiastic crowd that they would be treated to a showcase of Philippine artistry at its best.

The two-time Choir of the World Pavarotti Trophy winners presented a repertoire of exceptional interpretations that included sacred, spiritual, international, folk and popular music. Their guest choir, the Diplomatic Choir of Berlin, headed by its Director Ms. Barbara Leifer, complemented the evening by singing spirituals and international songs. To cap the evening, both choirs sang “Paraiso” by Ryan Cayabyab, arranged by Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang Jr.

Founded in 1992, the University of Santo Tomas Singers, under the baton of its founder and conductor Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang Jr., is the University’s premiere mixed choral ensemble composed of a select group of students   and   alumni   representing   the   different   colleges   and   faculties   of   Asia’s   oldest   university.  The choir has  completed  twenty  six  (26)  international  concert  tours in twenty three  (23)  prolific  years  of  national  and  international  recognition,  winning over 75 top prizes, making  them one  of  the  world’s  best  choirs.
