Filcom from Frankfurt Rhein-Main Organizes Bus Tour To Visit the Philippine Embassy in Berlin

October 2, 2013

BERLIN.  Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad received a group of Filipinos who traveled from Frankfurt am Main to pay a visit to the Philippine Embassy in Berlin.  Members of the group took the opportunity to renew their passports, while several others requested other consular services.

Ambassador Natividad welcomed the Filipino visitors and expressed her appreciation that the group came to the Embassy. She informed them of the Embassy’s upcoming activities in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Philippine-German diplomatic relations and plans to conduct more consular mobile operations for 2014 in different German cities. It was a poignant moment for some of the visitors, as they were able to participate in the singing of the Philippine national anthem for the first time in many years.

The Filipinos came from different parts of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region, known to be one of the most active cultural and financial centers in Europe and which boasts a high concentration of Filipino residents. The officers and staff of the Consular Section of the Philippine Embassy attended to their various consular needs, which included e-passport renewals, authentication, acknowledgement, and request for legal capacity to contract marriage.
The forty-three Filipinos and naturalized Germans (former Filipinos) traveled by bus from Frankfurt am Main and embarked on an eight-hour journey to Berlin during a weekend. Mr. Klaus Elbert, a long-time resident from Frankfurt am Main was the one who coordinated the activity.  “I am happy,” Mr. Elbert stressed, “to organize similar bus tour activities in the future, but I know this means extra work for the Embassy.”  Mr. Elbert is a known “friend of the Philippines,” as he is one of the organizers of this year’s Philippine Independence Day celebration that took place in Dietzenbach, Germany.    (END)

Philippine Embassy Berlin inducts new officers of the Federation of Filipino Organizations in Northern Germany

28 September 2013, Hamburg – The Federation of Filipino Organizations in Northern Germany (FFONG e.V.) held their annual meeting and induction of new officers at the Racket Inn Sport Hotel in Hamburg.  Minister Mardomel Celo Melicor administered the oath to the officers of the Federation led by its incoming President, Ms. Corazon Entapa.

Dr. Resurreccion R. Repotente, M.D., outgoing president and one of the original founders of the Federation, reviewed the past three and a half years of activities, including the inertia they had to overcome to unite Filipino community organizations in and around the Hamburg area into one higher organizational body.  She gave credit to some of the guests present who strongly advocated and assisted in organizing the Federation in 2010, including Prof. Dr. Robert Martens, and Dr. Antonio Repotente, M.D.  She encouraged the new officers to continue the work that the past officers have begun.

President Entapa expressed her thanks to the Philippine Embassy for being supportive of the Federation’s activities and for attending their induction evening.  She expressed the commitment of her officers to do their best to achieve the goals of the Federation and implement the plans they had drawn up during their four long annual meeting from mid afternoon until evening.

Mr. Eufracio Sale, incoming Vice President and Commander of the Knights of Rizal Hamburg Chapter, echoed the resolve of the new set of officers to meet the objectives they have set for themselves, counting on the advice and support of their Board of Advisers headed by Ms. Divinagracia Martens.

In his address, Minister Melicor thanked the Federation for their support of Embassy activities such as mobile consular services and overseas absentee voter registration, and for their active participation in important events like the visits to Hamburg of Vice President Jejomar Binay, and of SSS President and CEO Emilio S. de Quiros, Jr.  He informed them of upcoming activities being planned in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Philippine-German diplomatic relations, and asked them to demonstrate unity and solidarity with all Filipino community organizations nationwide by supporting these activities.

The Federation was organized in 2010 in the wake of the closure of the Philippine Consulate General in Hamburg a year earlier.  Seeing the need to coordinate and bundle their activities closer in the absence of a consular representation, they set out to form the Federation as a registered organization (eingetragener Verein e.V.) under local German laws. Its membership has since stabilized to 16 Filipino community organizations from the States of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony.

There are around 1,070 Filipinos living in the city of Hamburg itself, but if one includes the other neighboring states, the figure can be three times higher.  If those Filipinos who are naturalized are included, the total will even be higher at around 5,000.

Hamburg holds a special place in the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Germany because it hosted the first Philippine representation to Germany in the post war era. Consul General de Venecia was the career Filipino diplomat who opened and headed the first ever Philippine representation to Germany on 08 November 1954, which later on became the Philippine Consulate General in Hamburg.  It had jurisdiction over the northern federal states including the former West Berlin. His daughter is Madame Gretchen V. del Rosario, the wife of Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert F. del Rosario. (END)

Philippine Ambassador and Senator Pia Cayetano discuss PH-German Education Cooperation

September 29, 2013

29 September 2013. Berlin.  Senator Pilar S. Cayetano called on Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad during her visit in Berlin as part of her advocacy for education and in  her capacity as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture.

Senator Cayetano visited some schools in Berlin to learn more about the German system of education, particularly with respect to promoting languages and sports among the youth. She is exploring the possibilities of bilingual education, particularly in the context of Germany.

The Senator went to the Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium, the oldest Spanish bilingual school in Berlin for a discussion of the curriculum of the school as compared with that  of the Philippines.  The school has 980 students from grade one to twelve and works in close cooperation with the Spanish Ministry of Education.
Senator Cayetano also visited one of the four elite sports and high performance schools in Berlin, and one of the biggest elite sports schools in Germany.  It has a land area of 5 hectares that trains students from grade one to twelve with special emphasis on seventeen sports disciplines.  The current Olympic World and European champion in the men’s discus throw, Robert Harting, is a product of said school as well as Sabine Lisicki, number 16th in the current singles ranking in tennis and a finalist in the 2013 Wimbledon tennis competition.

Senator Cayetano examines the possibility of integrating more sports in the Philippine education curriculum to increase Philippine participation in the Olympic Games and other sports competitions. END

Ms. Charlotte Gödicke: In Remembrance of The Beloved German Daughter of Sagay

September 25, 2013

BERLIN.  Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad flew into Manila from Berlin last August bearing the remains of Ms. Charlotte Gödicke, an educator from Osterholtz, Lower Saxony, Germany, who helped inspire the community of Sagay City to achieve sustainable livelihoods through the Sagay-Osterholz Partnership.
Ambassador Natividad was met by representatives from the office of Congressman Leo Rafael Cueva of the Second District of Negros Occidental.  Ms. Godicke – considered by Sagaynons as “the beloved daughter of Sagay” – passed away on 21 February 2013.  From Manila, her remains were brought to their final resting place in Sagay City.

Ms. Godicke is a German citizen that had for decades been a champion of many humanitarian programs in the Philippines. She first came to Sagay in 1980 as part of the Sagay-Osterholz Partnership Program, a three decade friendship network established between Sagaynons  and the people of Osterholz District, Germany with the aim of fostering cooperation in the fields of culture, education and livelihood building.  Ms. Godicke had been instrumental in helping the community of Sagay develop and enhance its healthcare, school and administrative services.  Her selfless dedication and humanitarian efforts were recognized by the Philippine Government when she was conferred the Presidential Bana-ag Award in 2004.

Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael M. Cueva had even described Ms. Godicke as “a one woman NGO” and acknowledged that her lifelong involvement and untiring efforts forever changed the lives of Sagaynons.   (END)
