Benefit Concert Successfully Held at Berlin City Hall: German Private Donations at Almost 50 million Euros for Typhoon Yolanda

28 November 2013, Berlin. The Filipino Community and Philippine Embassy in Berlin, together with several high profile partners, successfully staged a benefit concert for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) on 27 November 2013 at the Berlin City Hall (Rotes Rathaus).  The concert, organized in less than a week, was made possible through the valuable support of the Federal Foreign Office (Auswäertiges Amt), Berlin Senate Chancellery (Senatskanzlei von Berlin), Willkommen in Berlin, and Germany’s Relief Coalition (Aktion Deutschland Hilft).  Dr. Abelardo Galang II, a German-trained Filipino pianist based in Berlin, served as musical director.

In the spirit of solidarity, hundreds packed the main hall of the Rotes Rathaus to learn more about how the general public could help those in the disaster-stricken areas of the Central Philippines.  Mr. Christoph Waffenschmidt, Chair of World Vision Germany and Board Member of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, emphasized the importance of these charity events, which ensure that the plight of the typhoon victims remains in the public limelight.  Mr. Waffenschmidt and Director Clemens von Goetze of the Federal Foreign Office both highlighted that although many German and international relief organizations are now ramping up the delivery of assistance, much more needs to be done.  Ambassador von Goetze emphasized that the Federal Government, in addition to the 6.5 million Euros provided in immediate humanitarian assistance, was committed to help the Philippines in the recovery and reconstruction phases.  Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, for her part, thanked the German government and people for their steadfast support.  She highlighted: “Tonight, just as we pay respect to those whose lives were cut short and to those who have survived, we also pay tribute to those who stood by us in our time of need, and to those who continue to stand by us as we clear the rubble, pick up the pieces, and rebuild… And Germany, the Federal government, and the German people, stood by us at the darkest hour.  If there is any silver lining in the dark cloud that was Haiyan, it is this hand of friendship extended to us by Germany, and by the international community.”  Private companies and citizens in Germany have now donated almost 49.6 million Euros (PhP 2.95 billion) to the NGO alliances of Aktion Deutschland Hilft and Aktionsbuendnis Katastrophenhilfe, which are now providing food and potable water as well as sanitation, shelter and medical services to the typhoon victims.  Almost PhP 350,000 was raised during the evening’s concert and at an earlier concert at the Filipino community’s Bayernallee parish.

The audience witnessed a medley of classical and contemporary songs, which included performances by Barbara Leifer, twin Indonesian pianists Sonja and Shanti Sungkono as well as Andion Fernandez and Dr. Abelardo Galang, who are Berlin-based Filipino artists.  Wilkommen in Berlin, the Federal Foreign Office’s diplomatic club, had its WIB Choir serenade the audience with Ryan Cayabyab’s “Paraiso” while the Philippine Embassy’s Mylah and Jose Mari Rubio closed the evening with a moving rendition of Cayabyab’s “O Bayan Ko.”

Aktion Deutschland Hilft, an NGO coalition composed of: Action Medeor, ADRA Deutschland, CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg, Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, Malteser Hilfsdienst, Habitat for Humanity, and World Vision, among others, is continuing to raise support for the typhoon victims.  More information on the organization may be obtained here: http://www.aktion-deutschland-hilft.de/de/hilfseinsaetze/taifun-haiyan-philippinen-vietnam/kurzinfo-taifun-haiyan-philippinen/

Berlin Model United Nations – Future Leaders extend support to typhoon victims

November 25, 2013

The Berlin Model United Nations (BERMUN) Conference, a bi-annual gathering of senior high school students from 28 countries and 63 participating schools demonstrated its solidarity with the Filipino people  and expressed its unequivocal support for the typhoon Haiyan victims. The Conference held from 20 to 23 November  was hosted by the JFK School in Berlin in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung , a non-profit German political institution dedicated in  promoting discussion and search for solution to global issues.

In a moving speech during the opening ceremonies of the Conference,  Ms. Sophia Natividad, daughter of Her Excellency Ambassdor Maria Cleofe R. Natividad  invited attention to the devastation left by typhoon Haiyan and the unprecedented global efforts underway to extend humanitarian assistance to typhoon victims.  Her speech aided by powerpoint presentation of photos taken during the onslaught of typhoon and complemented by the powerful rendition of  “O Bayan Ko” (call on the country to rise from the ashes of the calamity) by tenor Jose Mari Rubio  and soprano Mylah Rubio of the Embassy stunned  the audience  and filled  the packed amphitheater of FES with standing ovation applause and misty eyes.

At the end of the Conference, BERMUN raised more than a thousand euro from the sales of BERMUN mug which will be turned over to the Philippine Embassy.

Berlin Model United Nations Conference is a simulation of actual UN General  Conference where students  dressed in suits  play the role of delegates to UN Conference, draft speeches and  resolutions,  lobby and negotiate  assigned country positions.
These future leaders learn basic international and political law, and get acquainted with UN procedures. These would be leaders are trained in decision making while maintaining the UN ideals.
Directors Karin Howevann, William Robertson and Dr. Walter Peterson organized and managed the Conference.

Statement of Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad on Typhoon Haiyan

November 22, 2013

STATEMENT
OF H.E. MARIA CLEOFE NATIVIDAD
Philippine Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany
20 November 2013

On November 8, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines as a category 5 storm, possibly the most powerful storm ever recorded. Across 36 provinces, over thirteen million people were affected, four million displaced, and over four thousand deaths estimated in the wake of the typhoon.

The numbers fall short in conveying the scene, thick with desperation, of the countless survivors clamoring for food and aid. The numbers fail to convey the profound blow that the typhoon has exacted on the Filipino people, of a ‘national trauma’ collectively felt as the devastation rippled across the population. Just as the typhoon dealt its blow, so did it elicit the best of our virtues, the spirit of ‘bayanihan’ which saw communities across seven thousand islands pitching in the relief efforts, and enduring faith as thousands flock to the courtyards of ruined churches in the Visayas.

On behalf of the officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Germany, I wish to express our deep gratitude for the generosity and kindness of the people and government of Germany.

In the aftermath of the typhoon, the Federal Government immediately extended a helping hand to the Philippines. President Joachim Gauck went out of his way to visit the Embassy and to personally convey his sincere condolences. Bundestag President Norbert Lammert paid his respects for the typhoon’s victims during the opening plenary of the Parliament. Chancellor Angela Merkel called  President Benigno S. Aquino to offer support and express her message of sympathy. Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle also called the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and visited the Embassy to express his concern and condolences. Human rights commissioner Markus Löning himself witnessed the loading of relief goods from the Technische Hilfswerk and the German Red Cross via an emergency aid flight. German doctors were among those who first flew to the scene of the Devastation.

Germany’s emergency aid for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan now adds up to 6.5 million euros, and in addition to this amount from the Federal Government, German citizens have also raised 12.9 million euros through the efforts of the Aktionsbündnis Katastrophenhilfe.

We continue to receive messages of condolences and compassion as individuals and organizations continue to organize benefit concerts, football games, book sales, and fund-raising drives to help the survivors of the typhoon rebuild their lives and communities.

This outpour of aid from Germany and the international community and the messages of sympathy and solidarity from our friends in Germany, including the diplomatic corps in Berlin, will help us to rise in these challenging times.

Along with the Filipino community in Germany, and on behalf of the Philippines, we thank you. Maraming salamat po.

He noted that the images of the aftermath of the typhoon have ‘shocked us’ and emphasized that thousands have died and many people have lost their livelihood and need urgent help.

“We want to express that our thoughts are with you and the people of your country and we want exert best efforts to help alleviate suffering. Our condolences and concern for the families of the victims , our sympathies to the affected people . ”

After President Lammert’s speech, Chancellor Angela Merkel also spoke before the Bundestag and acknowledging the presence of Ambassador Natividad as representative of the Philippine Government, recalled her telephone conversation with President Benigno S. Aquino III and Germany’s commitment to help the victims of the typhoon.

On the same day, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle also announced that Germany’s emergency aid will be increased by an additional two million euros, bringing the total of Germany’s humanitarian aid to 6.5 million euros. On top of this, German citizens have also raised 12.9 million euros through donations, or almost twice as much as the German government’s contribution. (END)
