Philippine Premium Products Take Center Stage at the Cologne Anuga Fair

October 22, 2013

22 October 2013 – Cologne. The Philippines recently concluded its successful participation at Anuga 2013, the world’s largest food and beverage trade fair.  The 32nd edition, this year themed “Taste the Future”, took place on 10-14 October 2013 and brought together 155,000 buyers from over 187 countries.  The business-to-business focused trade fair included the participation of 6,777 exhibitors, twenty (20) of which came from the Philippines.

Anuga organizers noted that recent market trends are making food companies more focused on the freshness, taste, nutrition and sustainability of their food products.  Taking into account the increasingly refined sensibilities and eco-conscious orientation of consumers, the Philippines focused its “Taste by Design” Pavilion on seven premium products: banana, cacao, coconut, coffee, mango, pineapple, and tuna.

Friedhelm Dornseifer, President of the Federal Association of the German Retail Grocery Trade (BVLH), noted that “Ministers and Secretaries of State from all over the world travelled to Germany in order to visit Anuga… This strong presence underscores the position occupied by the trade fair in the global food industry.  Moreover, it shows that Anuga is an important platform for promoting dialogue among international policy-makers.”

The Philippine delegation was led by Senator Cynthia Villar, who was accompanied by former Senator Manny Villar, and supported by Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, DTI Undersecretary Ponciano C. Manalo, Jr., Special Trade Representative Jose Antonio Buencamino and CITEM Executive Director Rosvi C. Gaetos.

The Philippines “Taste by Design” Pavilion highlights 7 premium food products: banana, cacao, coconut, coffee, mango, pineapple, and tuna.

Buyers were able to sample the food and drink creations of Chef Gabby Pratts, Emma Lagoc, and Ronella Reytas.  The Le Cordon Bleu-educated Pratts is perhaps best known as the Resident Chef of ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda as well as the Corporate Executive Chef of the Aristocrat.

While noting that many exhibitors were still negotiating with potential buyers, Special Trade Representative Buencamino expected that total orders could exceed PhP 2 billion.

PHILIPPINES-GERMANY SIGN DOUBLE TAXATION AGREEMENT

September 12, 2013

Berlin.  Secretary Cesar V. Purisima, on behalf of the Philippine government, signed the Philippines-Germany Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.  The updated Double Taxation Agreement will further spur the Philippines’ burgeoning economic relationship with Germany by reducing the tax burden of Filipino and German investors.

The DTA is expected to reduce tax impediments to cross-border trade and investment and will enhance mutual cooperation on tax evasion, particularly by improving the exchange of information between Philippine and German tax authorities.  The agreement will also enhance mobility by directly benefiting citizens residing in each other’s countries.  This, for example, would allow Germans in the Philippines to avail of tax relief and would potentially stimulate technology transfer from Germany to the Philippines.

Both sides highlighted that the Double Taxation Agreement is an important step towards elevating bilateral relations to a new level.  During policy discussions following the signing ceremony, Secretary Purisima and senior officials of the Federal Foreign Office explored the future direction of relations, including technical cooperation on finance-related matters.  Secretary Purisima suggested that both countries work together on the global stage to address shared challenges, such as combating tax evasion and promoting disaster risk insurance.  Secretary Purisima has proposed the creation of global system of a Tax Identification Numbers (TIN).  The Philippines is also currently working with the ADB on a pilot earthquake insurance facility and is eyeing the creation of a regional insurance pool.  Germany, for its part, is supporting joint EU action against tax evasion and tax avoidance.  Germany was recently affected by intense flooding in June 2013 while the Philippines ranks as one of the most disaster prone countries in the world.
Secretary Purisima’s visit comes on the heels of high-profile exchanges in recent months that have included separate visits of Vice President Binay and Foreign Secretary del Rosario to Germany and German Foreign Minister Westerwelle and Labor Minister von der Leyen to the Philippines.  The Philippines and Germany will be celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations in October 2014 and both countries are looking towards more high value engagements in the coming months.END

GERMAN INVESTORS IMPRESSED BY THE PHILIPPINES’ ECONOMIC AND GOVERNANCE GAINS

September 10, 2013

DoF Secretary Purisima addresses Deutsche Bank Roundtable.
Meets with DB Co-CEO Juergen Fitschen

Frankfurt.  The Philippine government continued its strong push to aggressively engage EU and German investors, as Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima visited Germany.  On 9 September 2013, Deutsche Bank co-CEO Juergen Fitschen welcomed Secretary Purisima to Frankfurt to attend a Deutsche Bank (DB) organized roundtable with major fund and investment managers.

Deutsche Bank officials were impressed by the Philippines’ sustained economic growth and strong macroeconomic fundamentals.  Secretary Purisima highlighted to co-CEO Fitschen the strong upside potential of the Philippine economy, particularly the institutionalization of growth through good government and the strength of its people, who he views as ASEAN’s most mobile and adaptable people.

Co-CEO Fitschen noted Deutsche Bank’s solid relationship with the Philippines, particularly in arranging successful bond issuances and through the operations of its Deutsche Knowledge Services (DKS) unit.  Mr. Fitschen welcomed the government’s strong focus on good governance and emphasized that German investors are swayed by two main factors: the presence of reliable and efficient institutions and the rule of law.  Given his own personal experience, Mr. Fitschen hoped that the Philippines would devote more energy and resources in selling its success story to international investors.
During the investor roundtabls, Secretary Purisima emphasized that the Philippines is in a unique position of having alignment between political leadership, public mandate, and economic conditions. While current growth is consumption driven, Secretary Purisima emphasized that growth could exceed 7 or 8% on a sustained basis as infrastructure, foreign direct investments, export growth, and tourist arrivals pick up pace.  The participants expressed particular interest in hearing how the government is addressing bottlenecks in infrastructure and in realizing equitable economic development.  Sec. Purisima noted that the government is proactively addressing these issues by steadily increasing the share of infrastructure under the fiscal budget and through the public-private partnership (PPP) program.  The PPP program, involving major airport and public transportation projects, has drawn significant local and foreign investor interest.  The Philippines recently launched the USD 625 million Philippine Investment Alliance for Infrastructure Fund (PINAI) with Australia’s Macquarie Group and the Netherlands’ APG and is also a shareholder in the ASEAN Infrastructure Fund.  The government has also placed education and public health at the top of its agenda, including through the quadrupling of the conditional cash transfer program and efforts at realizing universal healthcare.  – END –

PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR RECEIVES KARLSRUHE SUSTAINABLE FINANCE AWARDS FOR DEVELOPMENT BANK OF THE PHILIPPINES

July 10, 2013

Berlin – Philippine Ambassador to Germany Maria Cleofe Natividad addressed an audience of international political, business, and finance leaders at the Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards Ceremony as the guest of honor at the City Hall of Karlsruhe, Germany last 4 July 2013. The international event was attended by, among others, former EU Commissioner and Foreign Minister of Austria Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup who welcomed the participants from all over the world.
Ambassador Natividad also received an award for the Development Bank of the Philippines in recognition of their innovative finance services in implementing its loan program. Two other Philippine institutions were recognized for innovative and sustainable financing – Land Bank of the Philippines and Alalay sa Kaunlaran, Inc.
The city of Karlsruhe presented three awards: Best Innovation in Sustainable Financial Product & Services, Outstanding Sustainable Project Financing and Outstanding Business Sustainability Achievement. Development banks from India, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka won the main awards.  The awards night was the highlight of the two-day Global Sustainable Finance Conference 2013: People, Planet, Prosperity which brought together international political, business, and finance leaders for an intensive discussion on innovative investments in climate and environment protection.
During the Conference, there were presentations on small and medium-sized enterprises; project financing; sustainable and low-carbon economies; sustainability as a factor in finance strategies; environmental change as it relates to sustainable development; and sustainable technologies.

In her speech, Ambassador Natividad recognized the Global Sustainable Finance Conference  as an excellent platform for dialogue and business networking in the field of sustainable finance and investments. She also acknowledged the work of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) under the leadership of its President and CEO Mr. Gil Buenaventura.

“I should give credit where credit is due: to the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) and the innovative people behind their “Water Revolving Fund”. I would not be here now without their excellent work,” the Ambassador said.

The Ambassador also cited the pivotal role of the DBP in the quest for sustainable and inclusive growth in the Philippines.

“It is one of the first banks in our country to integrate environmental considerations in all aspects of its operations. The DBP’s thrusts are in line with the investment priorities plan of His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III which encourages greater investments in green projects, infrastructures, and renewable energy. As in the past, the DBP is contributing to the outstanding economic growth of the Philippines this year.”

The Ambassador also expressed her admiration for Karlsruhe as “Green City” of Germany – as a model for sustainable development and stated that there is a great potential for cooperation between the Philippines and the entire Technologie Region Karlsruhe.

“There are areas where our interests converge. At over 92 million strong, the Philippines has a population dividend that can potentially help address yours skills shortage and at the same time facilitate skills transfer to us. We want to invest in our human capital and partner with an innovation and technology leader, such as Karlsruhe. We only need the proper mechanisms to facilitate this mutually-beneficial exchange, ” she stated.

The call for closer cooperation was well received by Lord Mayor Mentrup.

In closing, the Ambassador congratulated the organizers of the first Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards and the Lord Mayor for the successful gathering and urged further cooperation towards a sustainable future. – END-
