PH book industry comes together for world’s biggest book fair in Frankfurt

October 19, 2015

Drawing on the bayanihan spirit, the Philippine book industry made a collective pitch for the Philippines as ‘The Best Source of Content in Asia’ at the 67th Frankfurt Book Fair held on 14-18 October 2015 at the Messe Frankfurt on Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

With previous editions of the trade fair seeing only a handful of Philippine publishers participating, the Philippine collective booth this year was seen as a significant achievement, and one that is hoped to lead to a stronger Philippine presence in the world’s biggest book fair in the coming years.

The Philippine booth showcased diverse content from key players in the local publishing industry, namely, Abiva Publishing House, Inc., Adarna House, Anvil Publishing, Inc., Diwa Learning Systems, Inc., Lampara Publishing House, Inc. Precious Pages Corporation, Rex Group of Companies, University of Santo Tomas Publishing House.

The Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP), Philippine Educational Printers Association (PEPA), and the National Book Development Board (NBDB), were instrumental in bringing them together for this collaboration.

In a simple reception at the booth on 14 October, NBDB Chairperson Neni Sta. Romana-Cruz described the Philippine book industry as Asia’s “best-kept secret.” She invited the guests to browse through the books on display while at the same time sampling Philippine delicacies such as dried mangoes and lumpiang Shanghai.

Consul Catherine Torres, representing the Philippine Embassy in Berlin, acknowledged the importance of books as bridges across borders. “I am inclined to think that if we are able to encourage people to read more, from a young age, about other countries and other cultures, there might be fewer wars and conflicts for us diplomats to worry about,” she said. Philippine book industry takes to global stage in Frankfurt Book Fair 2015

October 12, 2015

Philippine publishers are joining forces to bring Philippine content to a more global audience through a country booth at the 67th Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurt Buchmesse in German) on 14-18 October 2015 at the Exhibition Grounds on Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is considered the world’s largest and most important event for the publishing industry. Every October, publishers, literary agent, authors, illustrators, media professionals, trade associations, and book lovers flock to Frankfurt for the five-day event that gathers thousands of exhibitors from over 100 countries to negotiate publishing rights and licensing.

Frankfurt Buchmesse

The Philippine delegation includes the following powerhouses from the local publishing industry: Abiva Publishing House, Inc., Adarna House, Anvil Publishing, Inc., Diwa Learning Systems, Inc., Lampara Publishing House, Inc.

The Philippine exhibitors will showcase a broad range of content aimed at presenting the Philippines as the best source of content in Asia. These include literary fiction, poetry, culture and the arts, graphic novels, history and politics, cookbooks, travel literature, reportage, children’s literature, reference material and much more.

The Philippine booth will be located in the International Publishers Hall No: 4 Stand No. B88, where it hopes to garner the attention of the 10,000 accredited journalists who will be present at the event. A special reception hosted by NBDB will take place on October 15, 4PM. Copies of the Philippine Catalogue featuring the participating publishers and other local presses not able to join the fair will be distributed to visitors.

The Philippines’ neighbor and fellow archipelago, Indonesia, is the Guest of Honor country for the 67th Frankfurt Book Fair, the first Southeast Asian country to take center stage at the exhibition. Last year’s GOH country, New Zealand, broke attendance records with more than 90,000 visitors at their pavilion within the last two days of the fair.

It is hoped that the Philippines’ participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair will foster a greater awareness of and interest in Philippine literature and culture, as well as encouraging Philippine publishers to gain more global exposure through more active participation in international book fairs. PH Water Sector Attracts Interest from German SMEs

June 9, 2015

As part of the recently concluded Asia Pacific Weeks (apwberlin.de), the Philippine Embassy partnered with the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI), the German Water Partnership, and IHK Berlin to organize a seminar on “Modernizing Water Infrastructure in the Philippines” at the Federal Foreign Office on 19 May 2015.  The information seminar, funded under the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy’s SME Market Development program, attracted more than 40 participants from government and the business sector, including more than 20 company representatives of German SMEs.

Ambassador Thomeczek recalled that last year, PPP Executive Director Cosette Canilao was a special guest of the German Water Partnership at its Annual General Conference.  That initial contact helped garner further interest to warrant a dedicated information session on the Philippine water sector.  She further noted that “economic growth continues to be city-driven, with 60% of the Philippines’ population living in urban areas.  While cities are centers of innovation, efficiency, and national development, we are cognizant that urban sprawl is also posing significant challenges to the delivery of basic services, including water and sanitation.  This is an important forum where we can discuss how German technology, capital and expertise can be deployed to transform our cities and towns into green, healthy, mobile, and safe places to live.”

Mr. Peter Kompalla, Executive Director of GPCCI, provided the Chamber’s perspective on the Philippine economy, highlighting that the Philippine economy has remained resilient and business confidence remains strong.  He further emphasized that the Philippines is seen as a key growth driver in ASEAN and the broader Asian region.  Mr. Camelo Tompar, CEO of Mactan Rock Industries, provided a local company perspective on opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the tourism/hospitality sector and for the provision of wastewater treatment facilities for industrial operations.  Mr. Gabriel Bautista of the Philippine Embassy provided a water sector overview.  The Embassy highlighted that privatization of the Manila water concessions led to an appreciable rise in service quality  while new PPP projects such as the USD 416 million New Centennial Water Source and the USD 542 million Bulacan Bulk Water Supply have garnered significant investor interest.

During the afternoon session, Dr. Michael Prange, Managing Director of the German Water Partnership (GWP), highlighted possible ways the GWP could support the German Mittelstand (SMEs) in further exploring market opportunities in the Philippines.

Participants learned that economic zones and water districts are also moving towards PPP models.  Water Districts are leveraging the expanding footprint of water concessionaires and an accommodative banking environment to pursue PPP deals for bulk water supply and sewage/sanitation services.  Discussions revealed that many contractors require technologies and project management expertise that cannot be undertaken locally. As a result, participants were made aware of the ample opportunities for German firms to partner with local construction companies, water concessionaires, and water districts.

Berlin Impressed by the Philippines’ Startup Scene

May 30, 2015

The Philippines emerged as the featured country of the “Labs to Public Dialogue: Create! Innovation Forum” held on 28 May 2015 at the Factory Berlin.  In its second edition, the Labs to Public initiative included a special workshop “startupPH: The Philippine Emerging Startup Ecosystem”, which was organized by the Philippine Embassy in partnership with Gateway63.  Citing the strong support from the Philippine Embassy, the Berlin Senate invited Ambassador Thomeczek as the lone diplomat to deliver welcome remarks at the event’s kick-off session.

Labs to Public-002In her remarks, Ambassador Thomeczek highlighted that: “Cities are the engines of economic dynamism, growth, and development. However, the dense concentration of people in a limited space also presents its attendant challenges such as dealing with traffic, pollution, natural hazards like flooding, and access to basic social services like water and sanitation.  This is particularly acute in mega city like Metro Manila. Technology has a great potential to ameliorate these conditions. However, technology can only be deployed when the on the ground conditions are known. For this reason, the real value added today is that we are bringing together technology experts and people with diverse backgrounds and on the ground experience who can complement one another, forge tangible partnerships and be real change makers.”

Labs to Public-003Labs to Public-004The Philippine presence was strongly felt as a diverse group of leaders in technology, innovation and social change flew in to Berlin to share their expertise.  Three leading lights of the Philippine tech scene were present to share their insights: Benjie Fernandez, the Chief Operating Officer of Voyager Innovations, Earl Valencia, President of Ideaspace Foundation, and Jay Fajardo, CEO of Proudcloud and Program Director of the Launchgarage.  They were joined by: Danilo Songco, President and CEO of PinoyME Foundation, Mon Ibrahim, Deputy Executive Director of DOST-Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO), and Christine Roque, senior campaigner of Change.org in the Philippines.

Labs to Public-008Labs to Public-007
During the workshop, Gateway 63’s Klaus Preschle helped to facilitate a good exchange of views on the Philippines’ strategic opportunities and startup landscape.  Earl Valencia focused on the private sector’s role in helping foster the Philippine innovation ecosystem.  He highlighted that Ideaspace Foundation, like similar incubators and accelerators in the country, had emerged to fill in the financing and knowledge gap in the country.  Ideaspace Foundation, which hosts more than 90 events per year, was capitalized by an initial injection of USD 11 million to incubate and invest in early stage startups that are geared towards solving emerging market challenges.  To date, it has funded 28 companies, including Salt, an emergency light and mobile charger powered by salt and water, and TimeFree Innovations, a virtual queuing system for small businesses.

Labs to Public-009Benjie Fernandez provided his perspective on how large telecommunications companies are helping to support innovation in the Philippines.  He noted that under the PLDT Group, Voyager was created to focus on the digital economy.  Voyager is pursuing an aggressive strategy by undertaking in-house product development as well as by making strategic investments and in pursuing partnerships and joint ventures.  The audience was particularly interested to hear about PLDT’s relationship with Berlin-based Rocket Internet, which has the largest global e-platform in the emerging world.  In addition to its 333 million Euro investment in Rocket, both sides are working on mobile commerce solutions for emerging markets through PayMaya.  PLDT is also working to make the Philippines the shared services hub for the Asia Pacific Internet Group, a joint venture between Rocket Internet and Ooredoo.Following the workshop, Jan von Meppen, CEO of Lundic, a Berlin-based digital media and e-learning startup, remarked that he was surprised to learn about both the market opportunities in the Philippines as well as the level of talent in the country.

Labs to Public-011Labs to Public-012Labs to PublicJay Fajardo and Mon Ibrahim, for their part, provided their key insights on the Philippines as part of the “Connective Cities” initiative.  They noted that the Philippines is trying to support an ecosystem that both facilitates and accommodates innovation.  For example, the Philippines was the first country to develop regulations to legalize app-based transport services.  In addition, Mr. Ibrahim highlighted that the government is seeking to enhance digital inclusion by providing free Wifi access points throughout the country.  Danilo Songo, for his part, provided a snapshot of how technology and incubation methods were helping small-scale farmers group together to aggregate their production, cut out the middle-men and find end-buyers.

Labs to Public-015Ambassador Thomeczek emphasized that the Embassy would seek to further support innovation exchanges between the Philippines and Germany, particularly in leveraging German technologies to help the Philippines find solutions to support financial inclusion, social entrepreneurship, as well as environmental monitoring, energy efficiency, and off-grid energy solutions.

LABS TO PUBLIC is a trans-disciplinary workshop series developed by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research uniting leaders of academia, business, culture, public policy, entrepreneur and innovation sectors.  LABS TO PUBLIC continues the city of Berlin´s efforts to provide new education, networking and prototyping formats for developing international partnerships, project kick-offs and long-term cooperation.***END
