September 7, 2012

Berlin. 7 September 2012.

The church hall has been the site for performances and recordings by renowned pianist-conductor Daniel Barenboem, tenor Dietrich Fischer-Diskau, and cellist Jaqueline du Pre decades ago.

The concert was organized by Mr. Cornelius Häußermann, Cantor of the Orgelbauverein Pauluskirche, an organization of parishioners and local government officials. The event was graced by the presence of Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad.

Demonstrating his extensive talent in classical music across several languages (German, English, Italian, Spanish, Tagalog and Cebuano), Filipino Bass-Baritone Zaens performed excerpts from European masters Hasse, Händel, Brahms, Strauss, Rossini and Donizetti. Mr. Zaens also featured Filipino kundiman songs in his repertoire to present a taste of Filipino musical tradition.

Accompanying Mr. Zaens is the highly-accomplished Filipino pianist, Dr. Abelardo Galang II, whose excellent piano performances of the European and Philippine pieces blended harmoniously with the robust voice of Mr. Zaens.

The package of German, English, Filipino and Visayan songs was very much appreciated by the mostly German audience. The audience found the poetic narrations delivered in the German language by the Ambassador’s daughter, Alexandra Natividad, and young Filipino-German pianist Manuel Pronath, even more charming.

In the early 70s, the Johannes Klais Orgelbau GmbH in Bonn undertook a two-year restoration work on the bamboo organ of Las Piñas. This benefit concert was an opportunity for the Philippines to help in return in the restoration of a historic pipe organ in Germany, and a way to express Philippine appreciation for this mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Embassy continues to support such musical performances as part of the Embassy’s public and cultural diplomacy efforts. END

Pioneering Exchange Program between German and Philippine Universities launched

September 3, 2012

“This student exchange signals closer cooperation in the field of education,” Philippine Ambassador to Germany Maria Cleofe Natividad said upon handing the students’ documents to Professor Dr. Axel Bader, who handles the program for Ingolstadt University.

Prof Bader, who teaches external accounting and international taxation at the Ingolstadt University, called on Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, to discuss Philippine-German cooperation in the field of education and to finalize the documents required of the visiting students.

The two universities have agreed to cooperate in admitting exchange students, enabling German students at Ingolstadt to spend their foreign guest semester at Silliman, and Silliman students to study for a semester in Ingolstadt. The German students will attend full credit courses at the College of Business Administration and the College of Computer Studies in the second semester of this school year.

Ambassador Natividad briefed Professor Bader on the developments in the Philippine educational system, including alignment to the Bologna process such as the K+12 school system. They also discussed the possibility for German students to undergo practicum in the Philippines, with the German dual system of education, particularly that of the Ingolstadt University, as a model, as well as scholarships for Philippine students to Germany.

According to Professor Bader, the Philippines, which is considered one of the so-called emerging markets, is an interesting destination for business students. Prof. Dr. Bader also thanked Ambassador Natividad for the Embassy’s active support for the pioneer exchange students, especially facilitating documentary requirements for their academic applications at Silliman University.
The Philippine Embassy in Berlin supports closer academic cooperation as part of its cultural diplomacy efforts. It was also instrumental in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between The Manila Times College and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt (Goethe University) in 2011.

An effective international tax treaty is expected to facilitate trade and investments.

“This new tax treaty will provide German investors with certainty and guarantees in the area of taxation,” Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad reported after the successful completion of the negotiations on a new bilateral tax treaty with Germany. “It will bolster our economic diplomacy efforts here in Germany.”

German companies in the Philippines include Continental Temic, Siemens, Lufthansa Technik, Daimler Benz, BMW, Bayer, and Bosch. – END

Philippine Embassy Berlin supports Bonn Conference on Vocational Training and Skills Development in the Philippines

July 10, 2012

Bonn. 10 July 2012.

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin supported the conference on “Development Cooperation with the Private Sector in Vocational Training and Skills Development in the Philippines” on 09 July 2012 in Bonn, Germany.

The one-day conference was organized by the Don Bosco Mondo e.V., the Federation of Catholic Entrepreneurs BKU, and the AFOS Foundation for Entrepreneurial Development Cooperation, in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ GmbH), with the support of the Bank im Bistum Essen eG and the Embassy.

Minister Mardomel Melicor underscores the Embassy’s full support for the conference.

Minister Mardomel Melicor underscores the Embassy’s full support for the conference.

The conference gathered experts from the private sector in the Philippines to dialogue with German experts on technical and vocational education and training (TVET). The discussions touched on various aspects of introducing an effective and sustainable vocational education program in the Philippines, whose graduates possess the right skills and competencies needed by the business sector, especially in the light of the country’s ongoing K to 12 educational reform program.

Mr. Tom Pätz, Managing Director of GIZ, Ms. Kathrin Oellers of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Minister Mardomel Melicor of the Embassy welcomed the experts and participants to the conference. The latter emphasized the Embassy’s keen interest in enhancing vocational education in the Philippines and its full support for the conference.

Dr. Isagani R. Cruz, President of Manila Times College and Curriculum Adviser of the Steering Committee on the K to 12 Educational Reform Program, and Fr. Dr. Dionisio M. Miranda, President of the University of San Carlos, provided an overview of the Philippine education reform, and the efforts of private universities to provide vocational and business experience to their college students.

Mr. Gerry Sta. Ana and Mr. Philip N. Tan, representing the private sector and the chambers of commerce and industry, outlined their experiences in Cebu in initiating and sustaining vocational programs that are tailor-fitted to the changing needs of the business sector.

Dr. Torsten Klavs of F. Porsche AG shared the successful experience in vocational training the Porsche Training and Recruitment Center Asia (PTRCA) in Makati. PTRCA operates a world class training program for Porsche mechanics in cooperation with the Don Bosco Technical Institute and PGA Cars.

It is the first Porsche training facility of its kind outside Germany, and its graduates meet all the skills and qualifications of a Porsche mechatronic automobile serviceman. Almost all graduates of PTRCA have been absorbed in Porsche maintenance facilities all over the world. So successful is the program that the German automobile manufacturer plans to open similar training centers in two other countries.

The private sector has a crucial role to play in putting vocational education in the mainstream of Philippine education. The German experience shows that the private sector must take the lead, actively set the curriculum and be at the forefront in the testing and certification of graduates.

To what extent elements of the highly acclaimed German dual system can be adapted to the Philippine setting, and what the roles of government agencies, certification bodies and civil society shall be, need careful reflection and study. Furthermore, public perception and social acceptance of TVET has to become more positive.

The participants were convinced that vocational training and skills development can be a field for innovative forms of development cooperation between the Philippines and Germany.

In Cebu, the AFOS Foundation for Entrepreneurial Development Cooperation of the Federation of Catholic Entrepreneurs BKU cooperates closely with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the University of San Carlos in various development projects. In the WE CAN – Visayas & Caraga project, AFOS partners with CCCI in providing support for trade and industry in selected areas in the Visayas and the Caraga regions. (END)
