FILIPINO AND OTHER SOUTHEAST ASIAN CUISINES TAKE CENTER STAGE AT ASEAN DAY RECEPTION

September 13, 2019

ASEAN Ambassadors, including Philippine Ambassador Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega (extreme left) with Ms. Kuenast (4th from left), Ms. Sigmund (6th from left), and members of the German Bundestag.

Filipino and other Southeast Asian cuisines took center stage in a reception hosted in Berlin today at the Maritim Pro-Arte Hotel by the embassies of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in celebration of the organization’s 52nd founding anniversary.

Each of the 10 embassies proudly presented dishes and desserts from each of their countries on tables adorned by unique cultural items.

Ms. Renate Kuenast, Chair of the Bundestag’s ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group and the event’s Guest of Honor, sampled the dishes and desserts on offer, including the Philippines’ palabok, a special noodle dish with shrimp sauce; chicken adobo (meat stewed in soy sauce and vinegar); and Filipino custard (leche flan).  The Philippine corner introduced an innovation by inviting guests to scan via their mobile devices a QR code on its food name stands to get an instant link to the recipes to the dishes on offer.

ASEAN Ambassadors, including Philippine Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega and Berlin ASEAN Committee Chair and Cambodian Ambassador Touch Sopharath, welcomed guests from the German Parliament, the Federal Foreign Office, Diplomatic Corps, and representatives of the embassies’ various local partners.

Inspired by the lyrics of the ASEAN Anthem, Ms. Kuenast, in her speech during the event, encouraged ASEAN to “dare to dream and care to share” for ASEAN and its partnership with Germany.

Amb. Dizon-De Vega welcomed German parliamentarians who sampled the food at the Philippine corner.

In her speech during the event, Ms. Kuenast took note of the lyrics of the ASEAN Anthem which says, “we dare to dream, we care to share together for ASEAN”. She encouraged the organization “to continue dreaming and sharing”, not only within the organization, but also with Germany and other partners in the European Union.

She also lauded the organization efforts towards sustainable development, which is also one of her core advocacies as a parliamentarian.

Ambassador Petra Sigmund, the German Foreign Ministry’s Acting Director General for Asia and Pacific Affairs, for her part, said that Germany, the EU, and ASEAN are “natural partners” because of their adherence to the rules-based multilateral order. She also announced Germany’s accession to ASEAN’s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, which coincided with today’s reception. END

The guests also had the opportunity to exchange views and apprise each other of latest developments in their respective fields over a hearty Filipino lunch.

In her welcome remarks, Ambassador Dizon-De Vega informed the group about the first-ever Philippine Studies Program in a German institution with the launch last July 2019 of the Advancing PH Studies Program at Humboldt University, a 3-year program which aims to promote Philippine studies including the Philippine language in Germany. Ambassador Ma. Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega, who attended the gathering with a team from the Philippine Embassy, took the opportunity to present the newly arrived Labor Attaché who will head the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Berlin, Atty. Delmer R. Cruz. Labatt Cruz introduced himself to the nurses and briefly addressed some of their most pressing questions about applying for an overseas employment certificate (OEC).

Also present was Fr. Jun de Ocampo, the chaplain of the Filipino Community, and representatives of the first batches of healthcare practitioners who came to work in Germany in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Dr. Rebeca Navarozza Kunze delivered a testimonial on their behalf, sharing with the nurses highlights of her experiences as a medical technologist, and later, as a dentist, in Dortmund and in Berlin. A slideshow was likewise presented chronicling the history of Filipino nurses and medical professionals working in Germany.

The speeches and presentations were followed by a buffet salu-salo featuring a spread of Filipino dishes prepared by the nurses themselves. Games, karaoke, and a raffle draw took place alongside the dinner.

September 9, 2019

Vice Consul Alvin Malasig (6th from left), Ambassador Dizon-De Vega (8th from left), Nelson Mandela School Head of Primary Ina Claussen (10th from left), and Ms Lea Millares-Sylvester (7th from right) join other Philippine Embassy staff, Nelson Mandela students and teachers at the Philippine booth.

The Philippine Booth was one of the most popular destinations and adjudged second best at the Festival of Nations held on 7 September 2019 at the Nelson Mandela International School in Berlin, one of the premiere primary and learning institutions in the city.

The Philippine participation was spearheaded by the students, teachers, and parents of the school’s 6-D Primary Class. Filipina-German faculty member Lea Millares-Sylvester worked with the Philippine Embassy in Berlin in the Philippine booth presentation featuring traditional Filipino fare such as pancit palabok, pancit guisado, puto, empanadas, banana and cassava cakes, and lumpia. Philippine tourism and Jose Rizal brochures were likewise given away to the visitors. A quiz about the Philippines was offered to the booth visitors while Nelson Mandela students made “beaches in a jar” crafts while promoting Philippine beaches as well as the protection of the environment.

Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-De Vega joined the Philippine Embassy and the booth team with volunteers from the Filipino-German community in talking about Philippine culture, tourism, and traditions at the Fair. This marked the Philippine Embassy’s first time to participate in the Festival which included 24 other countries. The event attracts nearly a thousand visitors annually throughout its one-day run.
