December 5, 2021

3 December 2021 — Alalay sa Kaunlaran Group of Companies, Inc. (ASKI) received the Best Innovation in Financial Services Award in the Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards 2021.  The award was given by the City of Karlsruhe and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development in recognition of ASKI’s success in financing micro and small enterprises, and green energy projects.

Minister and Consul Mary Luck Hicarte received the award on behalf of ASKI and conveyed the message of the Embassy of the Philippines in Germany.  The message focused on the Philippines’ being one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change despite its low carbon footprint; and the potential of financial institutions to be great catalysts for sustainable development.  On behalf of ASKI, the Embassy thanked the Karlsruhe Government and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development for elevating the profile and spreading the word about firms that practice and promote sustainable finance.

ASKI was formed in 1986 by a group of Christian business leaders in Nueva Ecija to promote economic inclusion among Filipinos in rural areas.  From a starting fund of Php60,000 provided by the Maranatha Trust of Australia, the group’s total portfolio has reportedly grown to Php1.7B.  With 95 branches in Northern and Central Philippines, it is said to serve more than 130,000 clients, and to have 800,000 members and their families covered through its social protection program. In celebration of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (ManaMo) in September, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted the second session of its UPLIFT  series (Unpacking the Pandemic’s Lessons through Interviews with Filipino Thought-leaders/Talents) on the topic “What ISDA Future We Want: A conversation on sustainable fisheries”.

Mr Paolo Domondon, Senior Director for Policy and Partnerships at Rare, talked about the organization’s biggest project, Fish Forever, which currently works with 900 coastal communities and 150 local governments in managing 100 million hectares of municipal waters in 8 countries, including the Philippines. He highlighted the importance of small-scale fisheries to global food, economic, and environmental security.

Mr Heister Bon Jaralve , a second generation Filipino-German shared about the startup he co-founded and its free app, Fischroute, which helps fishing enthusiasts locate waters that can be fished in Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This helps to promote responsible and sustainable fishing by encouraging people to try explore other fishing spots, reducing the overfishing of popular spots.

The discussion may be viewed in full on the Philippine Embassy in Germany’s Facebook page. END

13 August 2020, Berlin – Another batch of around 30 Filipino seafarers arrived this month in Hamburg, Germany to take on new assignments with Marlow Navigation Co. Ltd. with head office in Limassol, Cyprus and Marlow Ship Management branch office in Hamburg, Germany.

The seafarers arrived to work for Marlow Navigation, a global company which in the last four decades has expanded its network to 10 countries with around 1,000 shore-based personnel complementing the work of 13,000 crew onboard vessels operating throughout the world.

Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-De Vega welcomed the arrival of the Filipino seafarers noting that “this is yet another testament to the solid reputation our seafarers enjoy in the international maritime industry. We wish them a productive and safe stint as we all contribute to economic recovery efforts.”

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Germany continue to monitor the hiring of Filipino crewmembers in the global maritime sector, one of the hardest hit by the ongoing COVID pandemic. END
