The Philippines calls for a stronger role for women and increased sustainability in agriculture

February 12, 2014

Berlin. The Philippines participated for the first time in the 6th Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Summit and Global Forum on Food and Agriculture (GFFA), which took place from 16-18 January 2014. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary for Special Concerns Ms. Berna Romulo-Puyat led the Philippine delegation, which also included Representative (1st District Isabela) Rodolfo Albano III and Representative (2nd District Davao) Mylene Garcia-Albano and Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad.

Undersecretary Romulo Puyat served as panelist of the GFFA discussion on “Empowering Women in Agriculture” organized by Germany’s Fair Trade Forum. During the panel discussion, Ms. Romulo Puyat highlighted that the Philippines has embedded gender equality in both its culture and legal framework, with the country having been identified as having the smallest gender gap in Asia and 5th in the world, according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Gender Gap Index. The Philippine government has also implemented gender and development programs to support rural development, particularly for microfinancing and entrepreneurship.

The Philippines also signaled its interest to explore deeper cooperation on fair trade, particularly on technical assistance in securing Fairtrade certification. Undersecretary Romulo Puyat highlighted that fair trade practices support marginalized sectors, promote equality between men and women, and help market Filipino products globally. Ms. Puyat noted that a product like Destileria Limtuaco & Co.’s Manille Liqueur de Calamansi would be in a prime position to secure fair trade labeling. The liqueur is largely produced by utilizing the calamansi rinds produced by female Mangyans from Oriental Mindoro. Sales help finance the Mangyan Center for Learning and Development, whose main objective is to preserve the Mangyan culture and language.

Ms. Puyat and Ms. Andrea Futter of the GEPA Society for the Promotion of Partnership with the Third World, Ltd. (GEPA The Fair Trade Company) agreed to explore future collaboration including technical assistance. Currently, GEPA carries Muscovado sugar and dried mangoes as part of its product lines.

During the Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Summit, Undersecretary Puyat called on greater international cooperation to support disaster and climate-vulnerable countries like the Philippines to properly adapt, conserve and utilize its natural resources.END.

Ms. Charlotte Gödicke: In Remembrance of The Beloved German Daughter of Sagay

September 25, 2013

BERLIN.  Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad flew into Manila from Berlin last August bearing the remains of Ms. Charlotte Gödicke, an educator from Osterholtz, Lower Saxony, Germany, who helped inspire the community of Sagay City to achieve sustainable livelihoods through the Sagay-Osterholz Partnership.
Ambassador Natividad was met by representatives from the office of Congressman Leo Rafael Cueva of the Second District of Negros Occidental.  Ms. Godicke – considered by Sagaynons as “the beloved daughter of Sagay” – passed away on 21 February 2013.  From Manila, her remains were brought to their final resting place in Sagay City.

Ms. Godicke is a German citizen that had for decades been a champion of many humanitarian programs in the Philippines. She first came to Sagay in 1980 as part of the Sagay-Osterholz Partnership Program, a three decade friendship network established between Sagaynons  and the people of Osterholz District, Germany with the aim of fostering cooperation in the fields of culture, education and livelihood building.  Ms. Godicke had been instrumental in helping the community of Sagay develop and enhance its healthcare, school and administrative services.  Her selfless dedication and humanitarian efforts were recognized by the Philippine Government when she was conferred the Presidential Bana-ag Award in 2004.

Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael M. Cueva had even described Ms. Godicke as “a one woman NGO” and acknowledged that her lifelong involvement and untiring efforts forever changed the lives of Sagaynons.   (END)

TEAM PHILIPPINES-GERMANY MARK THE COUNTDOWN FOR THE 60TH YEAR OF PHILIPPINES-GERMANY RELATIONS

March 5, 2013

Berlin – Ambassador Maria Cleofe Natividad convened the Team Philippines-Germany’s consultation meeting in Berlin on 01 March 2013 to prepare for and mark the countdown for the celebration of the 60th year of Philippine-German diplomatic relations.
The annual meeting is a regular consultations mechanism of the Team Philippines-Germany, composed of the officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Berlin and the various Honorary Consulates with jurisdiction over Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hessen, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony. During the meeting, the accomplishments of the Embassy and the honorary posts during the previous year and the work program for the coming year were discussed to ensure that they were in line with the Key Result Areas of President Benigno Aquino III’s Social Contract with the Filipino people.

In 2012, the Team Philippines-Germany was given a service award by President Aquino, particularly in recognition of the innovative economic diplomacy model pursued by the team.

During the consultations meeting, presentations were made on the work programs in the area of political diplomacy, economic diplomacy, as well as agriculture, tourism and cultural promotion activities. The honorary consuls also reported on their work accomplishments and plans – Prof. Dr. Gerhard Zeidler, Consul General a.h. (Stuttgart), Mr. Eckbert von Bohlen und Halbach, Consul a.h. (Munich), Mr. Heinz-Peter Heidrich, Consul a.h. (Essen), and Mr. Hartmut Fromm, Consul a.h. (Dresden).

Ambassador Natividad gave strategic directions to the Team, basing her presentation on the concrete outcomes of the official visit of German Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle to the Philippines – the first German foreign minister to undertake such a visit in thirteen years. She reported that Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle have agreed on cooperation across the board between Philippines and Germany and had sought support from the Team to realize this vision for reinvigorated relations.

The members of the Team-Philippines supported the Ambassador’s call for efforts for further cooperation and pledged commitments for activities to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Philippine-German bilateral relations, with celebrations to begin by October 2013 until October 2014. END

Philippine Embassy Meets with Sabine Weiss, German Parliamentarian and Champion of Women’s Rights

October 24, 2012

Berlin. 24 October 2012.

“It is an honor to be a friend of a member of the German Parliament who shares our strong advocacy for women’s rights and who has a long and solid history of working for the welfare of Filipinos,” Philippine Ambassador to Germany Maria Cleofe R. Natividad said after a meeting with Ms. Sabine Weiss, member of the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag).

In Germany, where 82% – or more than 4 out of 5 Filipino migrants – are women, Ms. Weiss, a member of the Group of Women (Gruppe der Frauen) in the Parliament, is an important partner of the Embassy in its efforts to address issues related to women and migration.

Ambassador Natividad discussed with Ms. Weiss ways to deepen cooperation between the Philippines and Germany on these issues, and in particular, the project of Ms. Weiss to improve the welfare of Filipinos in Palapar Norte, Malasiqui, Pangasinan.

The origins of the Palapar Norte project go back to over thirty years – and illustrate the commitment of Ms Weiss to women’s rights and advocacy for delivering basic services to developing countries, like the Philippines.

In June 1989 as a young lawyer, Ms. Weiss was appointed to handle a human trafficking case involving ten Filipino women. The women were detained by the German immigration office and about to be deported. Together with fellow lawyers and advocates against human trafficking, Ms. Weiss was able to find a solution to the problem and to prevent further exploitation by traffickers. Through their efforts, five young women who were then eighteen years old were provided vocational education in Germany. After completing their vocational training, the Filipinos returned to the Philippines.

Months later, in 1992, Ms. Weiss paid them a visit in their province. She stayed in the small town of Palapar Norte in Malasiqui in Pangasinan, 250 km north of Manila. In the town, Ms Weiss saw the need for the delivery of basic services like education and health. Within the same year, she and her fellow campaigners founded the non-profit charity organization Pangasinan Ev. They collected donations to develop Palapar Norte. They bought a piece of land, livestock and agricultural machines, established a provincial hospital together with the adjacent town using imported German medical equipment. Three years ago, she inaugurated an elementary school. An expansion to high school is planned for the near future.

Today, the town has around 2,000 inhabitants who enjoy the fruits of the projects initiated with the help Ms. Weiss. Ms Weiss herself spends some time in Palapar Norte annually to supervise the projects.

Sabine Weiss is a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2009 representing the constituency of Dinslaken, North Rhine Westphalia. She graduated at the University of Bochum with a law degree. She founded the “Pangasina Ev” private sector development assistance project in 1992. She practised as a lawyer in Duisburg and Dinslaken from 1989, and is a member of the board of Solidarity with Women in Distress (SOLWODI) in North Rhine-Westphalia that was founded by Sister Lea Ackermann in 1997. She became the first directly elected mayor of the town of Dinslaken in 1999 and was re-elected mayor in 2004. END
