PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE MEETS HAMBURG-BASED FILIPINOS

May 17, 2019

Philippine Ambassador-designate to Germany Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega met with members of the Filipino Community based in Hamburg and nearby areas last May 11.

With the assistance of the Philippinishe Katolische Mission (Philippine Catholic Mission) led by Rev. Fr. Simon Boiser, SVD, Chaplain and Pastor June Mark Yanez of the German Seaman’s Mission, over 20 Filipino community leaders took part in an hour-long dialogue with Ambassador Dizon-De Vega and Consul General Lillibeth Pono. Among the matters discussed were forthcoming consular outreach missions to the area, common concerns affecting Filipinos and Filipino-Germans, major community activities in the coming months, the conduct of the 2019 Overseas Voting, and ways to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Embassy and the Community.

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega thanked the community members for their active participation, noting that “their continuing commitment is proof that the sense of community of Filipinos overseas is one of the country’s greatest strengths.”

After the Community Dialogue, the Ambassador and Consul General Pono visited the Duckdalben International Seaman’s Club, where Filipino-German staff member and former seafarer Nonie Olmedo briefed them on services and facilities provided to many Filipino seafarers on shore leave in Hamburg. END

NEW PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR MEETS GERMAN ARMED FORCES COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE OFFICIAL

May 17, 2019

Philippine Ambassador-designate to Germany Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega met with Retired German Navy Commander Thomas Boehlke, who is now with the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College during her visit to Hamburg last May 11.

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega and Commander Boehlke discussed the status of the ongoing General Staff Course offered by the College to international participants, including officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Commander Boelhke expressed appreciation that more Filipino scholars avail of the course on a regular basis as it not only provides new insights for foreign military officers but also helps establish links among them.

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega noted that the Philippines has benefited significantly from its participation in the course and reiterated that the Embassy will continue to assist in coordinating future Philippine participation. In addition, other activities such as panels and talks with Philippine participation could likewise be planned. END

The Philippine National Elections in Germany were concluded successfully with Ambassador-designate Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega’s personal delivery of the certificate of canvass and election returns to the National Board of Canvassers in Manila last May 15.

The counting process commenced as soon as the voting period ended at noontime (Central European Time), on May 13, and was completed at around 9 am the next day. The ballots were divided among five precincts and were counted by their respective Special Boards of Election Inspectors (SBEIs) composed of Embassy personnel and duly-appointed Filipino community volunteers.

Ambassador-designate Dizon-De Vega, as Chair of the Special Board of Canvassers (SBOC), led the canvassing of votes upon the precincts’ submission of results.

Representatives of the media and political parties, as well as independent observers were also present until the completion of the counting process.

A total of 2,317 Filipinos in Germany, including 41 seafarers in Hamburg, were able to cast their votes by mail or personally at the Embassy or on board vessels (for seafarers) during the elections, which ran from April 13 to May 13. END

PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN BERLIN BRINGS ELECTIONS TO FILIPINO SEAFARERS

May 16, 2019

As part of efforts to reach out to Filipinos all over Germany, a team from the Philippine Embassy in Berlin, personally led by Ambassador-designate Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega, brought the elections to Filipino seafarers on board vessels docked at the port of Hamburg on May 11 and 12.

With the assistance of German cruise operator AIDA, 41 crew members of the vessels AIDA Perla and AIDA Sol were able to cast their votes in this year’s Senate and party-list elections.

“Our able seafarers man a significant proportion of the world’s commercial vessels, and their hard work, far from our own shores and their families, contributes a lot to our economy. This is why the Embassy considers it important and exerts extra effort to give them a voice in charting our country’s future,” the Ambassador said.

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega and her team warmly welcomed the seafarers who perform various tasks on board. They took time out of their busy working day to exercise their right to vote, and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in this important democratic exercise.

Hamburg is home to Germany’s busiest port. It is a frequent destination and port of call for Filipino seafarers working on commercial vessels from all over the world. END
