Philippine Embassy Holds Seminar on Marriage and Philippine Family Law in Hamburg

A large gathering of Filipino community members listened attentively to the Seminar on Marriage and Family Law in the Philippines held on 09 September 2017 at the Kliener Michel Parish in Hamburg.

Close to a hundred overseas and former Filipinos and their German spouses and children attended the one-day seminar. Participants came from the Hamburg metropolitan region and outlying towns, including Kiel, Lübeck, Bremen and Itzehoe.

The seminar was co-organized by the Philippine Embassy, the UP Alumni Association in Germany e.V. (UPAA) and the Filipino Catholic Community in Hamburg. Former UPAA Germany President Atty. Suarez gave a lecture on the Philippine family code as well as pertinent laws on dual citizenship, inheritance law, marriage and divorce/annulment. She is a member of the Philippine Bar and is allowed to practice Philippine and German law in Germany.

In his welcome remarks, Minister and Consul Adrian Cruz gave a description of the work being done by the Embassy’s Consular and Assistance-to-Nationals Section. He was pleased to note that the seminar attendees came very much prepared with questions about marriage, nationality and divorce.  “The discussion seminars that the Philippine Embassy undertake is very interactive. We also learn a lot from the two-way dialogue that we have with the Filipino community,” he added.

A similar seminar was conducted in Cologne in July 2017 with assistance from the UPAA Germany and the Filipino Catholic Community in Cologne.

The Philippine Embassy – through the leadership of H.E. Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria Thomeczek has been forging closer cooperation with the Filipino community with regard to helping overseas and migrant Filipino women.  The Seminar on Marriage and Family Law in the Philippines is one of several Gender-and-Development (GAD) projects undertaken by the Embassy to educate the Filipino community on the basic concepts relating to GAD such as gender integration and helping eliminate discrimination against women.   (END)

YOUNG FILIPINO MUSICIANS PERFORM WITH ASIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA, EARN OVATIONS AT YOUNG EURO CLASSIC CONCERT

21151336_10155742837792112_1678049355807524812_nThe Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) brought the house down with an epic performance of the works of Chun-Wai Wong (premiere), Max Bruch and Gustav Mahler at the prestigious Konzerthaus Berlin.  An international audience of over a thousand guests was stunned by the young musicians´ extraordinary talent and youthful enthusiasm. The concert was part of the Young Euro Classic, a festival which features the world’s best youth orchestras.

The AYO´s 109 members are among the finest young musicians from 11 Asian countries. Seven of its members are Filipino – Gabriel Art Mendoza and Leigh Cellano (violin), Joven Edward Aquisap (viola), Glenn Aquias (cello), Micah Lejandro Villena and Rey Vincent Sunglao (double bass), and Kevin Julius Castelo (percussion). They are students of the Conservatories of Music of the University of Santo Tomas, St. Scholastica´s College, and the University of the Philippines.

About 22,000 musicians between the age of 17 and 27 auditioned to become part of AYO. Those selected earn the privilege of coming under the tutelage of an exceptional artist-faculty of principals from Europe and the United States. Through the years, the orchestra has performed with world renowned artists including the Philippines´ very own concert pianist Cecile Licad.  Its founder and conductor, Richard Pontzious, ably assisted by co-conductor James Judd, has been molding talented young Asian musicians into a professional orchestra for the past 20 years.

AYO´s Berlin stop is part of this year´s three-week world tour with 11 arranged performances in Hong Kong, China, Japan, the United States, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Belgium. END

1000th Triple Win nurse receives warm welcome in Munich

Filipino nurse Janette dela Cruz received a bouquet of flowers from Mr. Raimund Becker, board member of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) of Germany, to congratulate her for being the 1000th nurse to arrive in Germany under the Triple Win Project (TWP) during a press conference held on July 31 at the Caritas House St. Nikolaus in Munich.

The TWP is a healthcare employment cooperation program administered by the German Enterprise for International Cooperation (GIZ) and BA’s International Placement Services (ZAV) with partner agencies in four countries, including the Philippines, where it is overseen by the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA). The three other countries are Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Tunisia, whose nurses, along with their Filipino counterparts, comprise the 1,000 now deployed in German hospitals and healthcare institutions under the program.

Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria Thomeczek congratulated the new nurses and thanked the Triple Win Partners and employers for their respective contributions to the program. “In the 1960s and ‘70s, we had many nurses coming to work in German hospitals,” she said. “Their deployment stopped in the 1980s with the oil crisis, and it is now being revived through the TWP, which has been recognized as a model of sustainable migration, whereby both the destination and receiving countries benefit, as well as the migrants themselves.”
