Philippines Breaks Ground in Germany’s Fruit Logistica Trade Fair

February 9, 2013

Berlin (9 February 2013).

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that four globally-established Philippine companies have joined the Fruit Logistica at the MESSE-Berlin, Germany, on February 6-8, 2013.

The Fruit Logistica is considered the leading trade fair for the international fresh fruit trade. Four Philippine fruit exporters – AgriNurture Inc., Flora Integrated Farms Inc, Raspina Tropical Fruits Inc., and Refmad-V Enterprises – took part in the three-day international fair, which attracted more than 58,000 trade visitors from 130 countries and 2,500 exhibitors from across the entire fresh produce value chain.

The Philippine exhibition, dubbed “Food Philippines: A Feast of Flavors” was made possible by the Philippine Department of Agriculture. The main Philippine products featured were carabao-variety mangoes, red lady and solo papayas, Cavendish bananas, organic coconut water, queen pineapple and red-fleshed dragon fruit.  Many of these products were seen by European visitors only for the first time at the trade fair, and not surprisingly, they were the subject of much curiosity and attention.  All of the Filipino exhibitors expressed confidence that many of their high-quality agricultural products will be making their debut in the European market very soon.

Ms. Jocelyn Tago-Mallari, Vice President for Marketing, Raspina Tropical Fruits, said that their company made the right choice to join the trade fair as it gives them the chance to bring to Europe the fresh tropical fruits that are naturally-grown from the farmlands and pasteurs of Mindanao. Their product line include bananas, papayas and pineapples.

Ms. Flora Abadesco, President of Flora Integrated Farms Inc., expressed confidence that their organic products – notably the Queen Pineapple (Formosa variety) that is grown in the province of Camarines Norte – will be reaching consumers in Italy, Russia and France in the near future.  Mr. Inti Jaramillo, Vice President of AgriNurture Inc., said that in keeping up to the goal of his company to further explore other horizons abroad, they are now set to introduce organic coconut water in major eco-shops in the Netherlands.

Ms. Mildred Dacuycuy, who is representing Refmad-V Enterprise, which owns the fist dragon fruit plantation in the Ilocos Norte region of the Philippines, noted that quite a number of distributors were impressed by the distinct appearance and taste of the Saniata dragon fruit.

Ms. Karen Adecer, the Official Representative of Messe Berlin to the Philippines, revealed that the Fruit Logistica organizers “were especially excited that the Philippines had joined the trade fair for the first time.”  “Joining trade fairs is a commitment,” according to Ms. Petra Keitz, project coordinator for the Fruit Logistica, “and I hope to see more Philippine exhibitors in the coming years.”

The Saniata dragon fruit is noted for its red flesh and sweet juicy taste not found in other varieties;

the Queeon pineapples – known for their sweet flavour and crunchy texture – were said to have been named after Queen Victoria of Spain.

For next year’s Fruit Logistica, efforts are underway to expand the number of participating Philippine exporters, to include companies that are involved in cut flowers, aerial plants and vegetables.

Based on statistics from the Department of Agriculture, assorted Philippine fresh fruit products (e.g, bananas, mangoes, coconut and pineapple) have made its way to various parts of Europe, including Russia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, and the UK.  (end)

Statement of Secretary del Rosario for the Joint Press Briefing with Foreign Minister Westerwelle

February 8, 2013

Statement of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario for the Joint Press Briefing with Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle of Germany

westerwellevisit8feb2013

07 February 2013

Ladies and gentlemen good morning.

I am pleased to welcome His Excellency Dr. Guido Westerwelle and his delegation. This is the first visit of a German Federal Foreign Minister since His Excellency Joschka Fischer came to Manila in July 2000. I am glad that Dr. Westerwelle could reciprocate my trip to Germany last December 2011.

This visit underscores the importance that we place to our long-standing relations and attest our mutual desire to further enhance our ties. It is significant as both countries prepare for the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2014.

Relations between the Philippines and Germany are very comprehensive and cut across multiple spheres. Ours has a history that is firmly founded on mutual respect and close ties in every level and all fields of cooperation that serve our mutual interests.

It is in this spirit that we convened our bilateral meeting in which we took up the following issues:

  1. 1. Political consultation process

We agreed to hold the inaugural political consultation between the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Germany Federal Foreign Office at the sub-ministerial level in Manila this year. The political consultation process, which are intended to be held regularly on an annual basis, will serve as a platform to discuss bilateral issues on a number of issues, including defense and security cooperation, education and cultural relations, labor and migration, trade, tourism and investment and many others. This way, we are able to harness our different agencies to speed up and focus bilateral cooperation towards concrete accomplishments.

  1. 2. GPH-MILF Framework Agreement

I thanked Dr. Westerwelle for Germany’s expression of support to the signing of the Framework Agreement between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. I also expressed appreciation for Germany’s assistance for socio-economic development projects in the areas covered by the Framework Agreement implemented under the 1971 Philippines-Germany Technical Cooperation Agreement and through the EU assistance program.

  1. 3. Economic relations/Fraport issue

I am aware that most of you are eager to find out if we have solved the Fraport issue. The truth of the matter is that this problem is complicated and entails different layers of challenges. While we have not come up with a magical formula that would quickly make the issue disappear I have come to an understanding with Minister Westerwelle that we are looking forward to the positive resolution of the Fraport issue. Indeed, during our talks, we underscored the importance of finding a resolution to the NAIA Terminal III question. We are very optimistic about this considering the openness that both sides have expressed regarding possible options that we could explore.

However, I must emphasize that this single case should not prevent German companies from working with their Filipino partners to enable them to exploit opportunities in the energy, manufacturing, BPO, tourism and other infrastructure projects under the PPP and other schemes.

We should build on the strong economic partnership we have established in recent years. Philippine-German economic relations remain robust. Germany is our largest trading partner in the EU with bilateral trade amounting to US$3.1 billion in 2011. Germany is also the biggest source of tourists for the Philippines in Europe with 61,193 arrivals for the same year. German foreign direct investments in 2011 stood at US$21.7 million. In addition, Germany is one of the leading sources of official development assistance to support the implementation of development projects in the Philippines.

I highlighted positive developments in the Philippines that should encourage more investments from Germany including, among others, the recent conclusion of negotiations to amend the Philippine-German Double Taxation Agreement, positive grades for the Philippines by international rating agencies, the recent signing of the Philippine-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and the robust performance of the Philippine economy and what became the engines of this growth – namely our relentless pursuit of good government and the fight against corruption.

I encouraged German companies to follow the lead of their peers in capitalizing on the positive investment environment in the Philippines and put their capital in the country.

We also lauded the activities of the German Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in promoting bilateral economic relations.

  1. 4. Defense cooperation

Without going to specifics, we welcomed efforts undertaken by the Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) and the German Ministry of Defense (MoD) to re-invigorate defense relations. A delegation from the MoD is visiting Manila next week to conduct bilateral discussions with DND officials.

  1. 5. West Philippine Sea (WPS)

I conveyed my appreciation for Germany’s support to the Philippine position towards a peaceful resolution of our territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea. I informed him that the Philippines has filed a Notification and Statement of Claim to initiate arbitral proceedings to clearly establish the sovereign rights and jurisdiction over its maritime entitlements in the West PHL Sea. I asked him to continue supporting the Philippine effort for a peaceful and durable solution to this dispute.

  1. 6. Certification of Filipino Seafarers

I welcome the offer of the German Government to provide assistance in the training and certification of Filipino Seafarers that would allow us to comply with EMSA training and certification standards.

  1. 7. Official development assistance

I conveyed my appreciation to Dr. Westerwelle for Germany’s support of Philippine development through its official development assistance program.

  1. 8. Activities of German foundations

I conveyed appreciation to Dr. Westerwelle for German foundations in the Philippines, including the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Hanns Seidel Foundation, Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Friedrich Ebert Foundation, that are actively working with Philippine government agencies to promote good governance and the rule of law. These foundations are focused on capacity-building for our justice and law enforcement officials.

In addition to these issues, Dr. Westerwelle and I also had a very substantive discussion on other matters including initiatives to employ Philippine nurses in Germany, particularly in specialized services such as in emergency or operating rooms of hospitals.

We also exchanged views on developments in the ASEAN region and in the Middle East and developments in the EU.

Our meeting today was held in an open and cordial atmosphere, with remarkable consensus on the issues reflecting the healthy state and our dynamic partnership and the hopes of an even brighter future for Philippines-German relations.

We are pleased with the excellent state of our bilateral relations. Today, we reaffirmed the friendship between the Philippines and Germany and reiterated our commitment to continue working together to further enhance the multiple facets of our cooperation.

Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your attention. END

Ambassador Natividad exhorted the officers and staff of the need to commemorate Rizal’s martyrdom “not out of nostalgia, but out of respect for a man who showed us that everyone is capable of redefining themselves if they chose to do so.” Ambassador Natividad noted that the achievements and sacrifices of Dr. Rizal should serve as an inspiration to all. The Ambassador also echoed the remarks of Javier Gomez de la Serna, who had gone to school with Rizal at the Ateneo Municipal, that Dr. Rizal “has shown us that every Filipino can be like Rizal, that he can obtain what he wishes to obtain if he has the determination, ways and sincerity of purpose similar to what Rizal showed in doing important things in his life.” END

Ambassador Natividad was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Axel Bronstert, Chair for Hydrology and Climatology at the Institute, and Dr. Regina Neum-Flux, who heads the International Relations Office and who represented the University President. Prof. Dr. Manfred Strecker provided an overview of the scope of the research and academic work of the Institute of Earth and Environmental Science, including their international courses on geo-governance. Ambassador Natividad also discussed with Dr. Regina Neum-Flux other possible areas of cooperation between Philippine educational institutions and the University of Potsdam.

Dr. Maik Heistermann, head of the Flood Research Group, gave a presentation on the UP2 or the Partnership between the University of the Philippines and the University of Potsdam. The research involves radar-based rainfall estimation, rainfall “nowcasting”, hydrological simulation and flood forecasting. The current nexus is the dissertation work of Ms Abon in the Marikina River Basin. Dr. Heistermann also discussed their assessment of the recent south-west monsoon (habagat) of August 6-9 2012 which claimed many lives in the Philippines.

The Philippine and German institutes have forged a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide the framework for the current research partnership. The MOU covers not only an exchange of scientific materials, equipment, and expertise but also opportunities for mutual research and visits of staff and experts. The MOU provides for deeper institutional involvement between the two “UP” institutes and was signed by Prof. Dr. Axel Bronstert and Dr. Carlos Primo David of UP NIGS.

The MOU and the research work of Ms Abon will be highlighted in the upcoming Ambassador’s fellowship and roundtable on education cooperation with stakeholders in the field. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is expected to attend the event. END
