Photo credits: Sabine Enderle, Press & Information Office, City of Karlsruhe, Germany.

3 December 2021 — Alalay sa Kaunlaran Group of Companies, Inc. (ASKI) received the Best Innovation in Financial Services Award in the Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards 2021.  The award was given by the City of Karlsruhe and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development in recognition of ASKI’s success in financing micro and small enterprises, and green energy projects.

Minister and Consul Mary Luck Hicarte received the award on behalf of ASKI and conveyed the message of the Embassy of the Philippines in Germany.  The message focused on the Philippines’ being one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change despite its low carbon footprint; and the potential of financial institutions to be great catalysts for sustainable development.  On behalf of ASKI, the Embassy thanked the Karlsruhe Government and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development for elevating the profile and spreading the word about firms that practice and promote sustainable finance.

ASKI was formed in 1986 by a group of Christian business leaders in Nueva Ecija to promote economic inclusion among Filipinos in rural areas.  From a starting fund of Php60,000 provided by the Maranatha Trust of Australia, the group’s total portfolio has reportedly grown to Php1.7B.  With 95 branches in Northern and Central Philippines, it is said to serve more than 130,000 clients, and to have 800,000 members and their families covered through its social protection program. PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN BERLIN HOSTS NETWORKING EVENT WITH GERMAN PROFESSIONALS WITH TIES TO THE PHILIPPINES

December 1, 2021

Charge d’affaires, a.i. Lillibeth Pono delivers her welcome remarks

27 November 2021 — The Philippine Embassy in Berlin, headed by Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Lillibeth Pono, hosted an informal networking event with Halo-Halo, a group of Germans with roots in the Philippines.  Sixteen Halo-Halo members participated in the event.  Among them were three women from Henerasyon 2.0, a German podcast on Philippine culture which started in early 2021 but has since gained traction among Germans with links to the Philippines.

In her welcome remarks, CDA Pono discussed the Embassy’s efforts to reach out and exchange views with various groups, and find synergies with them on the promotion of the Philippines in Germany.

CDA Pono and Vice-Consul Mina Angeles Ganzon listen in as Minister and Consul Gerardo  Abiog replies to consular queries

Topics raised included the promotion of greater awareness of the Filipino culture among Germans; the Philippine studies programs in the University of Hamburg and the Humboldt University, and the intention of the group to travel to the Philippines to immerse themselves in Filipino culture, when the public health situation permits. Also raised were consular queries on dual citizenship and civil registration.

PH Embassy  in Berlin Inducts New Officers of the FEDERATION OF FILIPINO ORGANIZATIONS IN NORTHERN GERMANY

November 26, 2021

20 November 2021, Hamburg – The Hamburg-based Federation of Filipino Organizations in Northern Germany (FFONG e.V.) held the induction of its new officers and annual Christmas party on 20 November 2021. The Philippine Embassy’s Chargé d’affaires,a.i. Lillibeth V. Pono administered the oath to the officers of the Federation led by its incoming President, Ms. Corazon Entapa.

Dr. Resurreccion R. Repotente, M.D., one of the founders of the Federation, in her Welcoming Remarks recounted the history of the organization, including the objective of creating a forum of exchange through the FFONG after the closure of the Philippine Consulate in Hamburg in 2008. She encouraged the new officers to continue to harness the potential of each organization into a common force and continue to be a light to each other.

On the other hand, former FFONG President Ms. Divina Gracia-Martens underscored  that the Embassy has always been supportive of FFONG and able to troubleshoot problems and address the concerns of Filipinos, especially  the undocumented ones.

Ms. Corazon Entapa, in her acceptance speech as FFONG President  emphasized the need for Bayanihan and  cooperation.  She appealed  to the members of  the Federation to continue upholding their mission and organizational objectives.

Ms.  Pono  conveyed  to the newly-inducted officers that they are  leaders,  with assumed responsibilities,  to advance the welfare of their communities.   She  assured the FFONG that despite the closure of the Philippine Consulate in Hamburg, the Embassy will always be a partner of the Federation, as it has always been, in promoting the interests Filipinos and Filipino-Germans in northern Germany.

The Federation was established in 18 April 2010 in the wake of the closure of the Philippine Consulate General in Hamburg and is a registered organization (eingetragener Verein e.V.) under local German laws. Its membership includes 17 Filipino community organizations from the States of Hamburg, Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony. There are around 5,000 Filipino-Germans in the Northern German area.
