The Philippine Embassy in Berlin celebrated the 120th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with a series of events that not only showcased Filipino talent and food, but also brought out a strong sense of community within the Filipino community.

Diplomatic reception

The highlight of this year’s Independence Day celebrations was a diplomatic reception on June 15 attended by almost 200 guests, including officials of the German Government, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of various cultural institutions, and local business executives.

In her welcome remarks, Chargé d’affaires (CDA) Lillibeth Pono underscored the economic gains that the Philippines has achieved in recent years, as well as its strong ties with Germany.

Federal Foreign Office Director General for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ina Lepel, in turn, congratulated the Philippines for 120 years of independence and underscored the fact that the country is a vibrant democracy

Guests were greeted by delightful cocktails made of popular Filipino alcohol brand Don Papa Rum.

The special evening was filled with contemporary Filipino songs and folk songs performed the talented singing duo The Nightingales and Berlin-based Filipino artist Andy Roda.

Taste buds looking for new flavors got to try pancit and lumpia, specially prepared by Embassy personnel, while those with sweet tooth indulged in ube- and pandan-flavored ice cream courtesy of the Philippine Trade and Investment Center Berlin.

Each guest also went home with a souvenir package with tourism materials and handcrafted items from the Philippine Tourism Office in Frankfurt.

Flag ceremony

On Independence Day, June 12, CDA Pono and Embassy officers Catherine Rose Torres and Marie Cris Chieng led Embassy personnel and Filipino community members in a solemn flag ceremony at the Embassy.

The event also included a screening of “Jose Rizal: Sa Landas ng Paglaya,” a documentary produced by the National Historical Commission, and a breakfast salu-salo.

Independence Day Mass

Some 200 Filipino Catholics, joined by Embassy personnel, gathered for an Independence Day Mass dubbed “Santa Misa para sa Bayan” on June 10 at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Berlin.

After the Eucharistic celebration, CDA Lillibeth Pono read Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano’s Independence Day message, while Vice Consul Alvin Malasig delivered a presentation on the Philippines’ struggle for independence.

The program ended with the congregation singing “Pilipinas kong Mahal,” which was followed by a salu-salo at the parish community hall. END

SMALL GERMAN TOWN KEEPING DR. RIZAL’S MEMORY ALIVE

June 19, 2018

Tucked away in the forests of the Odenwald mountains, Wilhelmsfeld in the state of Baden-Württemberg occupies a special place in Philippine history. For a few months in 1886, the town was home to no less than the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

Today, Dr. Rizal is an integral part of the town’s identity, with markers, Philippine flags, and street names serving as tangible links to its storied past. Every year, the town and its leadership celebrate the life and deeds of the great man who was once a member of their community.

On June 17, Filipinos from different parts of Germany, including Philippine Embassy Chargé d’affaires Lillibeth Pono, and mostly German members of the Knights of Rizal led by Wilhemsfeld-Heidelberg Chapter Commander Sir Werner Filsinger, came to Wilhelmsfeld for this year’s Rizal Birth Anniversary celebration.

Dr. Axel Neumahr, Honorary Consul for PHC Stuttgart, likewise reiterated CDA Pono’s message and called on the residents of Wilhelmsfeld to continue what their forefathers have started by holding such event, not just out of tradition but to affirm the solid relationship between the said countries.

In her remarks during the occasion, CDA Pono called Wilhelmsfeld a symbol of the enduring bonds of friendship between the Philippines and Germany, and expressed the Embassy’s gratitude to Wilhelmsfeld Mayor Christoph Oeldorf and the past administrations of Wilhelmsfeld, and the Knights of Rizal, for keeping the memory of our National Hero very much alive – a hundred and thirty-two years after he walked the town’s streets.

The Chargé d’affaires encouraged everyone, especially her fellow Filipinos, ”to follow Dr. Rizal’s example and to always be mindful of one’s duty to our nation, and be an exemplary ambassador of goodwill of our motherland abroad.”

FILIPINOS IN GERMANY CELEBRATE THE SANTACRUZAN

May 31, 2018

Filipinos in three of Germany’s major cities, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Hamburg staged the traditional Santacruzan procession on May 27, the last Sunday of the month.

The festivities featured Filipinos representing historical and mythical figures dressed in Filipiniana finery and other colorful costumes parading along the streets of German cities with arches decked with flowers.

The procession commemorates the finding of the true cross by Empress Helena, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. According to Christian tradition, the event paved the way for the Christianization of the Roman Empire, especially Europe. It is traditional held in late May as part of the month Flores de Mayo.

In her remarks at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Berlin, Embassy Chargé d’affaires Lillibeth V. Pono emphasized that aside from its religious significance, the Santacruzan is also important to Filipinos because it is part of the nation’s rich cultural heritage. She also encouraged Filipinos to pass on the tradition to future generations of Filipinos in Germany.
