Philippine Embassy Presents Digital Artwork for the 30th Anniversary of German Unity Day

October 7, 2020

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega presents the digital artwork to Ambassador Petra Sigmund of the German Federal Foreign Office (photos by Berlin PE)

Philippine Ambassador Theresa Dizon-de Vega presented a digital artwork to German Federal Foreign Office Director General for Asia and Pacific Affairs, Ambassador Petra Sigmund, as a token of friendship on the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Germany’s Reunification.

The artwork, created by Filipino artist Nityalila Saulo, features the German word, “Einheit” or unity, written in the indigenous Filipino script of Baybayin.

The central message of the piece is that no wall can divide the human spirit.

The blocks represent the remnants of the fallen Berlin wall, and a window for those who witnessed the struggles of division and oppression. The Baybayin characters of Einheit (Aynhayt) come together to form an embrace, which represents the humility of clashing ideologies, the reunification of separated families, and the pivotal moment when the fall of the wall became a symbol of hope and unity.

The overall look is inspired by the Bauhaus art style which originated in Germany. This modern art movement is a unique aesthetic that combines fine art and design. END

The Philippine Embassy and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Berlin took part in the Kick-Off Meeting for the pioneering program Global Skills Partnership Initiative at the Universitats Klinikum Bonn (UKB) on 25 September 2020.

Spearheaded by Germany’s GIZ, the initiative is a product of a series of discussions between the Philippines and Germany on how to better integrate best practices sharing as well as offering insights on elements of the German nursing practice in the Philippine nursing curriculum to augment training received by Filipino nurses after arriving in Germany.

Along with the GIZ, the project also has the support of the German think tank Bertelsmann Stiftung, the German Federal Ministry of Health, and hospital-teaching institutions such as the UKB.

Under the program, training for PH participants will start at the university level with some elements of the German curriculum integrated into the local PH nursing curriculum

The program’s partner universities in the Philippines are Baliuag University and Philippine Northwestern University. The program is likewise being undertaken with two other partner countries, Mexico and Brazil.

Second Secretary and Consul Marie Chris Chieng and Labor Attaché Delmer Cruz were present at the program launch. Consul Chieng delivered the message of Philippine Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega, who underscored the potential role of such a platform for “encouraging more exchanges of best practices, ideas, and innovations from the nursing environments in the participating countries at a time when the sector faces new challenges and seismic changes.”

For his part, Labor Attaché Cruz noted the program is a “positive step towards enhancement of Philippine-German cooperation in human capital development. It presents an opportunity for a closer look at Philippine and German nursing curricula which could lead to harmonization and simplification of the recognition process for Filipino nursing professionals in Germany.” END

In celebration of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (ManaMo) in September, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted the second session of its UPLIFT  series (Unpacking the Pandemic’s Lessons through Interviews with Filipino Thought-leaders/Talents) on the topic “What ISDA Future We Want: A conversation on sustainable fisheries”.

Mr Paolo Domondon, Senior Director for Policy and Partnerships at Rare, talked about the organization’s biggest project, Fish Forever, which currently works with 900 coastal communities and 150 local governments in managing 100 million hectares of municipal waters in 8 countries, including the Philippines. He highlighted the importance of small-scale fisheries to global food, economic, and environmental security.

Mr Heister Bon Jaralve , a second generation Filipino-German shared about the startup he co-founded and its free app, Fischroute, which helps fishing enthusiasts locate waters that can be fished in Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This helps to promote responsible and sustainable fishing by encouraging people to try explore other fishing spots, reducing the overfishing of popular spots.

The discussion may be viewed in full on the Philippine Embassy in Germany’s Facebook page. END
