Philippine Ambassador-designate Theresa Dizon-De Vega met today with Mr Martin Henkelmann, Executive Director of the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc (GPCCI), who was in Germany to attend the German-Asian Business Dialogue and an Enterprise Europe business event in Stuttgart. Ambassador Dizon-De Vega was joined by Consul Catherine Torres as well as PTIC’s Commercial Counselor Althea Antonio and Mr. Van Tan. In Stuttgart, Philippine Honorary Consul Dr. Axel Neumarh likewise met with Mr. Henkelmann.

At the meeting both the Embassy’s Economic Team and Mr. Henkelmann, now on his half-year mark with the GPCCI in Manila, had an active discussion on ongoing initiatives from both sides to further promote mutual goals of enhancing Philippines-Germany commercial relations.

The past few months have seen a flurry of activities on the Philippine and German sides with continued active participation of the Philippines in trade and commercial fairs in Germany and our active participation in conferences including the recently held Asia Pacific Week Berlin, with a delegation led by DTI Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba and strong Philippine Start-Up Sector private delegation. The Philippines is slated to participate in the July Asia Pacific Forum in Bayern featuring New Clark City.

The GPCCI just concluded the successful Mabuhay Germany event in Manila and will host more discussions on Aviation and other major industry sectors in the Philippines. GPCCI will likewise organize and welcome more visiting German business delegations for the remainder of 2019.  END

PHL HONORARY CONSULATE IN STUTTGART WELCOMES 14 NEW “TRIPLE WIN” FILIPINO NURSES

March 6, 2018

(Dr. Axel Neumahr (center, back), Honorary Consul for Baden-Württemberg, together with the 14 new Triple Win Filipino nurses accompanied by Ms. Cerelina Ernst (front row, right), Head of Caregivers at “Haus am Kappelberg”, one of the 19 facilities managed by the Wohlfahrtswerk für Baden-Württemberg.)

Philippine Honorary Consul in Baden-Wurttemberg, Dr. Axel Neumahr welcomed 14 new “Triple Win” Filipino nurses in a simple ceremony held last March 2, at the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Stuttgart.

The nurses who arrived in Germany last February 7, are currently undergoing further caregiving qualification training and language courses under the supervision of Wohlfahrtswerk für Baden-Württemberg, the hiring German institution. After the training’s conclusion on March 23, the nurses will be assigned to various facilities within the region.

Wohlfahrtswerk für Baden-Württemberg is one of the largest providers of geriatric assistance in Baden-Württemberg with 1,400 employees caring for some 2,000 patients in 19 facilities.

In his welcome message, Dr. Neumahr congratulated the nurses for passing their qualifying exams in the Philippines and for making it to Germany. He expressed optimism that the nurses could very well perform the tasks expected of them with the skills that they learned in the Philippines and Germany, complemented by Filipinos’ innate ability to learn the German language quickly.

The event included an open discussion which gave the nurses an opportunity to share their personal and professional concerns. They were also reminded about the challenges at the workplace and to exercise professionalism at all times, particularly in dealing with their employers, patients, and the general public.

Dr. Neumahr encouraged the nurses to give themselves sufficient time to adjust to their new environment while building a support system, not only from among their fellow Filipinos but with other nationalities as well.

The Honorary Consulate prepared some Filipino food, much to the delight of the nurses who admitted that they have been missing “Pinoy” food since they arrived in Germany.

The Triple Win program is a bilateral diplomatic project between the Philippines and Germany which started in 2013.  Under the program, the Central Office for Foreigners and Specialists’ Placement Service (Zentrale Auslands- und Fachvermittlung or ZAV) of the German Federal Employment Agency and the German Association for International Cooperation (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit or GIZ) are recruiting qualified nurses from the Philippines, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Tunisia for nursing and elderly care facilities. The program helps address the needs of Germany’s healthcare sector while providing job opportunities for participating countries. END

IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee Approves Designation of Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area

September 29, 2017

IMO2

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved on 07 July 2017 during its 71st session the Philippine application for the designation of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (TRNP-PSSA) with the adoption of the MEPC Resolution on the TRNP in the Sulu Sea PSSA.

In adopting the resolution, MEPC 71 took note “of the ecological criteria, in particular the criteria relating to uniqueness or rarity, naturalness, diversity and fragility criteria, and the socio-economic and scientific criteria of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park as well as its vulnerability to damage by international shipping activities and the steps taken by the Philippines to address that vulnerability.”

Earlier, MEPC 71 adopted the recommendation of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee approving the TRNP area  as an Area  To Be Avoided (ATBA) by all types of ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards.  The ATBA is aimed at minimizing  the risk of damage from ship groundings and pollution damage by international shipping activities and to protect the area’s unique and threatened species as well as to preserve as far as practicable its critical habitat and diversity.  The MEPC resolution stated that mariners should exercise extreme care when navigating in the area bounded by the geographical coordinates of the PSSA and adhere to the ATBA, which is defined by the following coordinates:

(1) 09º 17′.75 N, 119º 47′.79 E

(2) 09º 04′.73 N, 120º 12′.76 E

(3) 08º 49′.63 N, 120º 13′.99 E

(4) 08º 29′.63 N, 119º 53′.16 E

(5) 08º 36′.15 N, 119º 35′.46 E

(6) 09º 11′.06 N, 119º 36′.67 E

thence back to point (1).

The ATBA for the PSSA will take effect on 1 January 2018 at 0000 hours UTC based on an IMO Safety of Navigation Circular

In the resolution designating the region surrounding the TRNP as a PSSA, the MEPC invites IMO Member Governments to recognize the ecological, socio-economic and scientific criteria of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park area as well as its vulnerability to damage by international shipping activities.  The MEPC also invites Member Governments to note the ATBA to address the area’s vulnerability. – Philippine Embassy in London.
