UPLIFT Sessions – Season 2 Episode 3: “Walang iwanan: Filipinos innovating inclusion”

Virtualahan, WiTech founders show how youth are leading the way in digital inclusion

Audrey’s search for a female role model in tech spurred her to create a venture that has transformed her into a role model for other kids interested in coding.

17 May 2021, Berlin – The Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted the third episode of Season 2 of its series Unpacking the Pandemic’s Lessons through Interviews with Filipino Talents/Thought-leaders (UPLIFT) last Friday, 17 May 2021, with a session entitled “Walang Iwanan: Filipinos innovating inclusion.” The conversation featured two young Filipino entrepreneurs, Ms Audrey Pe, founder of WiTech, and Mr Ryan Gersava, founder of Virtualahan. Ms Angel Kröne, founder of CurAlly, also delivered a testimonial.

Ryan, an Ashoka fellow, narrated his journey coming from a poor family with 10 children in Sultan Kudarat towards starting his own social enterprise, which has succeeded in providing livelihood opportunities to differently abled individuals through a combination of technical training and life coaching.

Audrey, who is now pursuing her studies at Stanford University, shared how her search for female role models as a middle and high school student keen to learn more about coding, led her to discover the gender gap in tech, and prompted her to create a platform to support other girls interested in programming.

Angel, meanwhile, talked about CurAlly’s recent Women’s Month initiative, wherein people may sponsor telemedicine consultations for women facing reproductive health and other issues, and unable to pay for their own consultation.

In her closing remarks, Ambassador Ma. Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega expressed the hope that the sharings would inspire those in the audience to do something similar. “Not necessarily along the same lines or at the same scale, but at least, to consider supporting ideas and initiatives such as theirs,” she added.

Philippine Embassy partners with OFBank for digital finlit webinar

24 March 2021, Berlin – As part of its Women’s Month offering for Filipinos in Germany, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted a webinar entitled “Kagalingan at Kaligtasang Pinansyal sa Panahon ng Digital” in partnership with the Overseas Filipino (OF) Bank.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Ma. Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega highlighted the particular relevance of sound financial management amid the pandemic, especially for women. “Women have had to bear a particular burden during the pandemic, and one of them is managing the finances of the family or the household,” she said.

OFBank Overseas Representative Officer (ORO) for Europe & Latin America Leover Loyola then gave a presentation on common digital scams and how to avoid them, followed by the embassy’s Economic Officer Cathy Torres, who gave tips on how to use social media more prudently in order to avoid predatory ads as well as scams.

The presentations were followed by a lively Q&A, where some of the participants shared their own experiences with scams and asked about OFBank’s services.

The live session was attended by more than 20 participants, and the webinar recording has also been shared on the embassy’s Facebook page, and may be viewed at https://fb.watch/4qTcByiUXE/  (END).

Berlin PE’s 3rd UPLIFT session spotlights howstartups are helping transform PH healthcare

October 12, 2020

Ms Angel Crone, founder of CurAlly, talks about the startup’s services,
which promote patient activation, engagement, and empowerment.

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin (Berlin PE) hosted on 8 October the third session of its UPLIFT series (Unpacking the Pandemic’s Lessons through Interviews with Filipino Thought-leaders/Talents) on the topic “An App a Day: The future of digital health in the Philippines.”

The session featured Mr Jay Fajardo, a Manila-based serial tech entrepreneur who founded Medifi (www.medifi.com), Ms Angel Crone, a Munich-based social innovator who founded CurAlly (www.curally.ph), and Mr Miguel Encarnacion, managing partner of Unifier Ventures (www.unifier.vc), a Berlin-based, Filipino-funded venture fund whose investments include those in Philippine-based digital health startups Aide and Medcheck.

The conversation delved into how COVID-19, while posing tremendous challenges to the Philippine healthcare system, presented an opportunity for digital health startups to help address these problems through such solutions as tele-consultations, including through asynchronous chat-based format, issuance of e-prescriptions and e-medical certificates, home-based health services like vaccination and diagnostic tests, and the provision of easily accessible information on hospitals and COVID-19 testing locations.

Mr Jay Fajardo notes that Medifi has seen a drastic jump in the doctors
using the platform from 45 in March 2020 to around 3,300 at present.

It was also noted that the digital healthcare field offers the potential for Filipinos overseas to benefit from the “high-touch” services of doctors in the Philippines, especially where linguistic barriers, as well as cultural idiosyncrasies, makes it difficult for them to optimally access medical advice abroad.

A video recording of the session may be viewed on the Embassy’s Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/PHinGermany/videos/3459657990766691. (END)
