FFONG Musical Night presents a Multitude of Filipino-German Talents

November 19, 2018

The Federation of Filipino Organizations in Northern Germany, e. V. (FFONG) held a Musical Night celebrating Filipino talents in Hamburg and nearby areas.  Presentations included musical pieces which were sang and played on piano, saxophone and guitar by Filipino-German talents.

Philippine Embassy Charge d´Affaires Lillibeth Pono recognized FFONG as one of the Embassy´s staunch partners in ensuring consular concerns of its members are attended to, in promoting camaraderie among Filipino community members in northern Germany, and in uplifting the image of the Philippines in Germany.

The Musical Night also featured (left) Ms. Janine Goos (guitar), Mr. Edwin Gonzales (vocals) and guest performer (right) Mr. Jack Nuguid (guitar).

CDA Pono further expressed her delight in being part of FFONG´s celebration of music, “Music has always played a big role in the lives of Filipinos. It has already been prevalent even in our history as a people.  Germany, on the other hand, oh – we all know how rich their musical history is! Put these two together, and we have incredibly talented young Filipino-German musical artists who can one day be the future of both Filipino and German music.”

FFONG´s Musical Night was organized to provide young artists a platform to showcase their talents and to promote appreciation for music with the help of other local musical artists.

There are over a thousand Filipinos based in Hamburg, according to the latest figures from the German Federal Statistics Office.  FFONG is one of the twenty Filipino Organizations based in Hamburg. END

Gina Apostol encourages diversity of migrant voices in Berlin workshop

August 22, 2018

Award-winning Filipino writer Gina Apostol conducted a writing workshop at the Philippine Embassy in Berlin as part of the embassy’s Gender and Development (GAD) program, in coordination with the Philippine Studies Series Berlin. The workshop, entitled “Perspectives and Narration in Migration: Writing narratives about the self, work, and foreignness through the eyes of others,” was attended by 12 participants from diverse backgrounds.

The workshop participants listen as someone responds to a writing prompt given by Ms. Apostol.

Ms. Apostol, who teaches English at Fieldston School in New York and whose third book, Gun Dealers’ Daughter, won the 2013 PEN/Open Book Award, led the participants through several writing and storytelling exercises. In the first activity, she challenged them to share an emblematic story about themselves with a partner, and then narrate their partner’s story in the first person. In another activity, she asked them to write a short piece of prose fiction about “an Other,” which they then had to rework from the perspective of another character in the original narrative.

The exercises elicited a range of insights from the participants. In response to having their stories told by another person, some admitted feeling tense about how faithful the other person would be to their account while others were fascinated to hear their tales embellished by their partner.

Meanwhile, the exercise on writing about an Other brought to the surface participants’ thoughts and feelings about themselves being “othered,” whether because of their ethnicity or gender, or other aspects of their identity. One of the participants observed that such ‘othering’ could in fact take place within a group such as overseas Filipino communities, where hierarchies tend to form.

“Indeed, you might both be migrants, but how shared is your story? It’s the point at which stories merge across hierarchies that’s interesting,” Ms. Apostol said. She also underscored the need for empathy when a writer “occupies” another character.

Ms. Apostol’s fourth novel, Insurrecto, is due to be released in the Philippines and the United States in November. (end)

Dr. Margie Holmes tackles relationships at GAD talk in Berlin PE

August 14, 2018

The Philippine Embassy in Berlin organized a talk on “Relationships and Psychological Wellbeing” by prominent Filipino psychologist Dr. Margarita Go-Singco Holmes on 9 August 2018 at the Embassy’s gallery. More than 30 guests attended the activity, including Post’s personnel.

Dr. Margie Holmes in candid conversation with the audience, moderated by Consul Cathy Torres, the Embassy’s GAD focal point.

The activity was held under the banner of Post’s Gender and Development (GAD) and Understanding the Philippines through Lectures and Interviews with Filipinos in Town (UPLIFT) programs.

Dr. Holmes offered insights and answered questions on the topics of love and marriage, sex and attraction, and mood-affective disorders. She said that human beings’ “romantic” feelings and choices are often driven by genetic and biological factors.

These factors are not immutable, Dr. Holmes added. For instance, women’s increasing participation in the work force has led to their financial empowerment and lessened their reliance on men to protect and look after them, something that has traditionally influenced women’s choice of partners. At the same time, however, biological and genetic changes tend to happen on an evolutionary time scale so it is difficult to be entirely free from their sway.

Dr. Margarita Go-Singco Holmes obtained her BA degree in Psychology from the University of the Philippines, a Master of Public Health from the University of Hawaii in Manoa, and a Doctorate in Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from Ateneo de Manila University. She has taught in universities in the Philippines and abroad, has hosted her own TV show and published several books, and regularly writes columns for newspapers and online media. (end)
