PHILIPPINE EMBASSY PROVIDES MORALE AND CARBO BOOST TO FILIPINO BERLIN MARATHON RUNNERS

Filipino participants of the 2019 Berlin Marathon got a morale and carbo boost from the Philippine Embassy in Berlin last September 28, the eve of the much-awaited elite sporting event.

Over 50 Filipino runners from the Philippines, the US, and the Middle East enjoyed a carbohydrate-rich Filipino dinner at the Embassy with old friends and new acquaintances.

Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-de Vega welcomed the runners to the Embassy, and was out on the streets of Berlin on marathon day itself, September 29, to show her support.

 

The dinner, the second such event organized by the Embassy, was part of its Sports Diplomacy and Martial Arts Day celebration, which included an arnis demonstration by the Deutscher Arnis Verband e.V on Breitscheidplatz, along Berlin’s famed Kurfürstendamm Avenue.

The Berlin Marathon is one of the world’s elite marathon races held annually in the German capital since 1974. The current world record time for a marathon was established in the 2018 Berlin Marathon and remains unsurpassed. This year’s marathon and its side events attracted over 62,000 people from 150 countries, including the Philippines. END

DTI Undersecretary Rodolfo meets with German industry, visits Ayala-owned Via Optronics

DTI’s Undersecretary for the Industry Development and Trade Policy Group Ceferino S. Rodolfo visited Berlin and Nuremberg on 23-24 September 2019 for a series of engagements with German industry. Usec Rodolfo was accompanied by Director Evariste Cagatan of the Board of Investments (BOI), OIC Lanie Dormiendo of BOI’s International Investments Promotion Service (IIPS), Mr Steve Recto of BOI’s Industry Group, and Mr Mykell Jizen Reyes of BOI-IIPS. His program was organized by PTIC-Berlin, headed by Commercial Counselor Althea Karen Antonio, in coordination with Berlin PE.

In Berlin, Usec Rodolfo met with Mr Volker Thum, General Manager of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) regarding the Philippines’ interest to become a bigger aerospace parts player. He also met with Mr Harald Zimmer of the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (VFA), Mr Tobias Helmstorf of Bayer, and Dr Gregor Strauch of Boehringer Ingelheim to discuss possible cooperation in enhancing Filipinos’ access to medicine.

He then presided over a Philippine Business Roundtable Discussion which PTIC-Berlin co-organized with the German Asia Pacific Association (OAV) and the Chamber of Commerce (IHK) Berlin at the Philippine Embassy. The activity was moderated by OAV Managing Director Ms Almut Rossner and Mr Jan Ijspeert of IHK-Berlin.

Ambassador Ma. Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega delivered the welcome remarks, where she highlighted the importance attached by the Philippines to its economic ties with Germany, as shown by the fact that Usec Rodolfo’s visit is the 7th high-level visit by a Philippine official this year. She further noted that apart from the trade between the two countries and German investments in the Philippines, Filipino companies are also discovering Germany as an investment destination.

After Berlin, Usec Rodolof and his delegation from the Philippines, accompanied by Ambassador Dizon-De Vega and Ms Antonio, traveled to Nuremberg for a site visit to Via Optronics, in which Ayala’s AC Industrials holds majority shares. They also had a meeting with Mr Armin Siegert of Nuremberg’s Chamber of Commerce (IHK Nuremberg), which has been a partner of PTIC-Berlin and the Embassy in promoting Philippine-German economic cooperation in Bavaria, including through the Asia Pacific Forum Bayern. INDIGENOUS FILIPINOS SHARE PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, SEEK SUPPORT TO PRESERVE WAY OF LIFE

Eight members of various indigenous tribes in Mindanao made a brief visit to Berlin to seek the support of the international community and Filipinos abroad in preserving their unique way of life.

In a forum organized by the Embassy last September 25, the indigenous persons led by Datu Nestor Apas of the Laingan Manobo tribe, recounted their painful experiences as unsuspecting pawns in a long-running communist insurgency. Members of the audience expressed solidarity with our indigenous brethren, and promised that they will share the information with their family members and friends.

The group, accompanied by Philippine Ambassador to Germany Theresa Dizon-de Vega, met separately with members of the Bundestag’s ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group, led by Green Party member Renate Künast, and officials of the German Federal Foreign Office.

The German officials expressed appreciation for the firsthand information provided by the group. They also signified their willingness to look into the diversion of foreign aid by bogus organizations, which support the perpetration of further violence against civilians and public servants in the Philippine countryside. Philippine Ambassador Hosts Filipino Afternoon Tea for Wilkommen in Berlin

Philippine Ambassador to Germany brought a taste of the Philippines to members of the Wilkommen in Berlin (WiB) during an Filipino Afternoon Tea Reception at the official residence on 25 September 2019.

The WiB is the largest international club composed of members from the diplomatic corps, business, academe, media, and other sectors. It is the only international club which is affiliated with the German Federal Foreign Office which ensures its wide reach in the international community in Berlin.

 

The Filipino Tea Reception kicked off the WiB’s Fall 2019 calendar and saw members enjoying afternoon tea with a Philippine twist. Instead of scones and cream, guests were treated to Chicken Adobo Canapes, Cassava Cake, Kutsinta, Puto (Steamed Rice Cake), and empanadas. Also on offer were Philippine organic teas like Lemon Ginger, Tanglad, Banaba, Pandan, Coco Melange, and Blue Flower from fair trade company Tsaa Laya and organic coffee grown in Mt. Apo, Davao and Benguet. Guests were also given tokens of Philippine chocolate-covered dried mangoes.

 

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega presented a glimpse of the Philippines during the reception focusing on the history, tourism sites, weaving traditions, and the cuisine of the country.  A special guest, Ms. Miranda Konstantinidou, owner of Konplott Jewelry which has 35 stores throughout Germany spoke about her Cebu-based design center and workshop. She shared her positive experiences working with Filipinos in Cebu and praised their creativity, discipline, and skill.

 

Chef Bulawan Callanta of AYAN Restaurant in Berlin and Lighting Designer Troy Gonzalez who also dabbles in cooking shared what makes Filipino cuisine special.

 

The WiB members expressed delight at being introduced to Philippine culture and cuisine and were particularly taken by the unique flavors in both the beverages and the dishes they sampled. WiB member Jane Williams-Boock, a German-American law professor, praised the Philippines for being a country doing its best to be more ecologically sensitive and for the warmth and positivity of its people.
